Types of Data Management Systems vary from one organization to another. Some data management systems use a web browser interface, some practical applications, and some use the server-side architecture. The types of data management also differ concerning the integration of the DMS. Some data management systems require the user to log into the DMS from an outside location. Other types of data management systems do not need users to log in to the system.

Types of data management systems based on the web browser interface are known as web-based Data Management Systems or WASM. Web-based data management systems allow users to access data management information from remote locations. The web-based DMS can access information through the browser interface, a URL, or a local application. The most commonly used format for data access is through a local application.

The Enterprise Information Technology Systems

Types of Data Management Systems based on the server-side architecture and require users to be physically present at the organization's data center are referred to as Enterprise Information Technology Systems or EIT. EIT systems allow users to gain access to information from any location in the world. The information in an enterprise IT system usually resides in a data center protected by physical security measures. This physical protection is necessary to protect sensitive data that is generated by the system. An EIT system also controls and monitors the access to this data via access control procedures implemented into the EIT software.

Types of Data Management Systems based on the client-server architecture require users to be present at the organization's data center during business hours. Users are granted permission to access information employing a username and password. Users are authorized to make changes to the information that resides in the DMS. Changes are made by accessing a web page via the Internet or via telephone. The DMS then displays the changes that have been made to the data and report them to the user.

Two Types of Data Management Systems

The first type of DMS is the application data management system. This type of DMS allows information to be stored in application servers. These applications are usually customized according to the organization's needs. The other significant type of DMS is the information store management system, often called the information warehouse management system.

The Data Management System that require minimal staff approval for access include desktop data management systems designed for small organizations. Desktop data management systems do not require any special hardware to operate. Another type of DMS is the web-based data management system designed for small to medium-sized businesses and is accessed via the Internet. File and print sharing capabilities with file formats such as HTML and PDF are also available with these types of data management systems.

A Wide Variety of Software Types

Various information technology devices such as desktop computers, laptops, scanners, and printers are used to store the data. The data can be protected using devices like firewalls, passwords, and encryption. Different types of information technology devices are designed to meet other purposes. Different types of data management systems are also available to manage large data sets, such as massive databases and file systems.

A wide variety of software types are available to help people manage data. The data can be analyzed with data analysis software to provide insight into how a particular data set functions. Some types of data management systems are available free of charge; however, specific DMS require a monthly fee. Software updates and upgrades for managing the data are needed regularly. A professional data manager should be hired to install and run the DMS efficiently.
