Are you familiar with the story of "The Last Leaf" written by one of the famous writers, O. Henry?
This story is a remarkable one, and one of my most liked stories I have heard before.
If you don't know about this, I'll share with you the story in a quick plot.
There was a girl who was suffering pneumonia, and she's about to give up in life. Outside her window she saw an old vine growing from a wall nearby. She always thought to herself that she will die when the last leaf falls from the vine. The vine's leaves were shredding day by day as the autumn turns into winter.
But the last one leaf stays and didn't fall for several days resulting to the quick recovery of the ill girl's health. But before that happened, there was an old artist who always wanted to make a masterpiece painting but he always fails. He thought of his ill neighbor who puts her hope on the last leaf of the vine. And then one night when the last left fell, he spent his whole night painting a realistic leaf on the wall (as seen from the girl's window). Unfortunately, the old man dies from pneumonia, for he was wet by the rain and cold as he painted his masterpiece that night.
While the sick girl seems to wait for a miracle to happen, the artist sacrifice his life for his ill neighbor. That leaf symbolizes hope for the girl. Making her despair turns into a new hope, by that realism of the leaf in the wall, gives another hope and chance in the life of the ill girl.
The old artist's masterpiece of the last leaf did not only became successful in terms of the art but it became a life savior for the neighboring sick girl.
This story gives us lesson in life. While you are down and on its way to give up in life, there's always someone out there who secretly has concern about you, willing to sacrifice and want to give you hope and find how wonderful to live life again.
