Don't just read to read. Read to understand
***Reading*** is defined as a cognitive process that includes decoding and analyzing symbols to obtain meaning. It is an active process of constructing meanings of words. ***"Don't just read to read. Read to understand."*** This is a quote by Jill Telford. Why do we need to understand what we read? Anyone can be taught to read, first as a child, we are taught how to read, and be literate as we grow. But the sad thing is, not all is given the privilege or the chance to be taught on how to read and write as well. One of the best activities we can do here on @Read.Cash is reading. We don't write only articles here, but we leave comments with our thoughts, feedback, and share ideas with the other users and to do all of this, we need to read first, not only read but we must understand what we are reading, what the other authors want to share or implies with us by their written articles and read each beyond and between the lines.
Reading is one of the foundation activities of the study. You need to be able to comprehend what you read and to be able to recall and recollect the main and major ideas when you need and require them. When you read to completely achieve meaning from the story, characters, or author's message, you heighten your understanding and knowledge of a text. ***If you missed out on good reading skills, it's not too late.*** Here are some tips for you to be able to read to understand effectively: Take small pauses and ask more questions when reading Take a longer pause after a difficult section Visualize, think in pictures Making connections Take good notes Find the main ideas Reading comprehension, which includes the skills needed to comprehend the meaning of a text, can be improved. The more you read, the more it allows you to better understand other forms of text, topics, and stories. Despite the new technologies nowadays, where most materials are digital, it is up to you what to read, and what to choose between digital or printed materials. What matters most is that we should always keep in mind, that reading is still an important skill. Yes. We need to read, not only in our school, in the office, but everywhere. Reading is needed everywhere, when we buy, when we go out and need to see directions and road signs, reading is needed. That's why, we should know how to read, not only read it but to fully understand what the whole context is. 😊

Yes. Reading and scanning or skimming is different, but when you skim first what you read, it will also help you to understand the whole content of what you are reading. But of course, to comprehend fully, you need to read it and apply those given tips above.
Quite a good article. Too often I fall in the trap of reading too quick. My work sometime requires a lot of reading but I do not have to understand feelings or every details. So i tend to read quick most of the time. At least here I learned to take my time more when reading. I like the little list of tips. It is a good one. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing your personal thoughts and experiences about reading. Actually, I am a fast reader too when I was in high school, but the good thing is I am able to comprehend what I've read and remember easily what is importantly written in the materials. But now, I can only do reading here on Read.cash, and somehow, I can understand what is the author's message in his/her article. And about the tips, yes I also think it is helpful to share some tips how to understand effectively what you read. I'm glad you appreciate it. 😊
Thank you for this reminder. I was discussing with @Macronald just the other day on the issue of declining reading culture. It is a really worrisome development most people especially students read to pass examinations not to under stand or acquire knowledge which is quite unfortunate.
Yes, especially now in the 'new normal' of education, where students are studying at home. I've seen a lot of students do not care about their modules and lessons at all, they're after and answer their assignments without reading first their lessons, and the worst part is, they're not the one who's answering their homeworks. So how can they learn? After all, they only care about passing their grades. And just like what you've said, it's worrisome. And about the good students, I admire them for their eagerness to learn and study. Doing their best just to learn and understand each and every lessons.
It's really non sense if you're reading without understanding the content. Just like what many users have been doing here, they just scan the article and drop some comments like "nice article" but didn't even read the content. They're annoying. People should know the importance of reading and understanding. Through understanding the content, you'll be able to gain knowledge from it.
Indeed. If we read just to read it is pointless. Just like we're reading but our mind is not focused. And, I agree with you about some users here.. Those users have no interests and intentions in the articles, but they are after the money. When we understand what we read, it is easy for us to remember certain words, topics and gain knowledge about something that can be useful not only in our school but to ourselves also. Reading is really an important skill, anywhere and everywhere we have to read, in the market, in malls, in the road, in school even at home. That's why we should give importance in reading. Reading without understanding is useless. I even encountered difficult to understand articles here but I get to read it again especially when the author is showing a point in his article.
Yes, just like the other users are doing. They just read the title, and give comments below which are not relevant to the topics and concepts of the article. I even encountered one before, I shared the story of the Last Leaf by O'Henry, and there's this one comment that says, 'nice photography' or something, but my article is not about photography. And take @Read.Cash rules for an instance, some says new rules are implemented, but the truth is the articles about, Points Freeze and Power users were posted 3 months ago. The read the whole content, but not knowing the day or month posted. It means they lacked to see one of the important part of the article.
Its a bit insulting to find comment in your inbox with a nonrelevant one. You managed to write a long article and put your effort in it only to read a 1-2 words. 😅
**Reading without understanding is a waste of time** Why read, if you don't have intention of understand the content. To understand one has to be interested in reading. **Our generation is not illiterate but a literate** I see myself as an aliterate. Though I wish to read, but it always comes as punishment, and I tire easily. But I am working on it, and improving on my reading culture. I want to believe That I have improved a bit, because whenever I open an article hear, I try to read to the end and If I don't understand, I have to reread.
You got a point, but sometimes, even a text is not interesting, we must understand what we are reading, just like simple procedures, instructions, a recipe or even implemented rules. And our generation is literate, but not all is given the chance and privilege to know how to read and write. It's so nice to know that you are trying to improve your reading skill. I know, in time you'll see yourself better at it. And rereading is one of the best way to understand what you read, you can skim first then, start to read again.
