The Philippines was first discovered by Ferdinand Magellan (Spanish name: Fernando Magallanes 1, Portuguese names: Fernão Magalhãnes ) on 16 March 1521.

The life of Magellan

Magellan have been involved in his father's expeditions to Africa when he was 25 years old. He had hoped to undertake an expedition in India.

Like Christopher Columbus he thought that when the world was round, He could go east by sailing the west so went to King Emmanuel 1 of Portugal, with a view to helping his country, he ask her to give him money to undertake expedition. But the King did not believe his plan, in the wrath of the King, Magellan left the the country where he is born.

First Philippines Expedition

Europeans first arrived in the Philippines on the arrival of the Portuguese-led Expedition of Ferdinand Magellan on 16 March 1521. Magallanes marched in the Island if Cebu. Claimed it for spain, and gave it the name Islas de San Lazarus.

He was friendly with some local locals. They even held a traditional bloodstream where blood was pumped outof the arm mixed with water or wine and they drank together. In this way the blood of his companion is an his veins that making them

" Blood Brothers", a sacred irrevocable covenant. Magellan even convinced himself to be a Christian

She made it to Humabon of Cebu because of Christianity, children respect dults This prompted the commercialization because at that time the elders was not respecting the elders because they could no longer do good to the tribe. It is the youth who command the elders.

If represented an important event in the Philippines history. Magallanes won against Humabon by bringing a new culture that values human dignity.

However, Ferdinand Magellan was killed by Lapu-lapu's group which opposed Spain Rules. Magellan challenge Lapu-lapu in a battle, to show how the European fought.

There are 3 reason why Magellan was defeated against Lapu-lapu:

  • He didn't send a staff to examine the area.

  • He warned the enemy to attack him

  • He agreed that more tribes would fight against his staff.

In the following decades, other expedition were sent by Spain to the Philippines. Ruy Lopes de Vilalobos led an expedition in 1542 in the island named Las islas Felifinas ( from the name Felife II of Spain) the island of Samar and Leyte. Soon the name was given throughout the archipelago.

Spanish Colony

The permanent settlement was estabslished only on 1565? the when the expedition led by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi arrive in Cebu from Mexico. The Spanish leadership was established in small independent communities unaware of the centralized government.

Six year later, after defeating Muslim datu, Legazpi established a capital Manila, providing the main port of the look of manila, a large population and close to the plains of Central Luzon, Manila became a center of colonial government, as well as military religious and commercial activity.

Famous galleons sail between Manila and Acapulco, Mexico. They brought silver and some precious metals from the new World to Manila to buy spices from Moluccas and porcelain, ivory, lacquerware and silk from China and Southeast Asia. Although they were used in Mexico, most of the goods were brought to Spain, for sale in Europe.

The Philippines became province of Nueva Spain until 1821, when Mexico gain independence. Conquest of the archipelago succeeded without fighting ( except for Muslims)

The Spaniards have been problem for the Muslim in Mindanao and Sulu. In response to the Spanish attacks on Muslims and their allies, they invaded areas in Central Visayas under Spanish rule. The Spaniards launched campaigns against the Muslims, but they have no definite results until the middle of the 19th century.

The church and the state were interwined during the Spanish periods. Religious establishment have become the responsibility of the state. One of the Spain aims in the colonization of the Philippines was baptism of tribes into Christianity. The change of religion occurred due to the absence of any other good religion, other than islam., Which was widespread in the south. Church ceremony became popular which LEDs to the inclusion of various festival in Filipino tradition.
