The British archaeologist Sir Leonard Woolley unearthed many golden treasures in his excavation at Ur. The site of this ancient city lies in Iraq, halfway between Bagdad and the head of the Persian Gulf. About 4,000 years ago, Ur was one of the most important cities in this region. In one of the royal tombs, Woolley found the body of a prince called Meskalamdug. On his head was a helmet of beaten gold in the shape of a wig, with the hair knotted into a neat bun at the back. Arround the edge of the helmet were lace holes for the padding that the prince wore underneath.
