In a July 31 2021 Twitter post, Elon Musk unveiled the Cyberpunk inspired Neuralink company bar. Many pointed out the similarities between the Neuralink bar and a braindance bar found in Cyberpunk 2077‘s Night City. Musk is no stranger to Cyberpunk or Night City, has been in a relationship with Claire Boucher, also known as Grimes, also known to the world of Cyberpunk 2077 as Lizzy Wizzy for some time.

The Neuralink bar resembles Lizzie’s Bar, the Mox headquarters in the Watson district of Night City. Elizabeth “Lizzie” Borden owned Lizzie’s Bar until her death at the hands of the Tyger Claws in 2067. Borden was known for treating her workers fairly and defended them from violent clients. After Borden’s death, the Mox took over the Bar. The Mox says its mission is to protect working girls and guys from violence and abuse.

Neuralink is a neurotechnology company developing computer-to-brain interfaces. San Francisco-based Neuralink was co-founded in 2016 by Musk. Since 2017, Neuralink has worked to develop devices to treat severe brain disease with the goal of human enhancement.

In April 2021, Neuralink demonstrated a monkey playing the classic video game “Pong” using the Neuralink implant. A significant step forward for the technology since Neuralink was first used in 2002 to demonstrate the ability of a monkey to move a computer’s cursor.

Cyberpunk edgerunners have a long history of connecting to devices using a technology called neuralware that connects to the users central nervous system. Links to the neuralware are embedded in the skull or arm. In 2077, Neuralware appears to be a direct descendant of the Neuralink technology, making Neuralink a case of life imitating art or art imitating life.

Neuralink’s first product, the N1 Link, is a 1024 channel device that transmits data via a wireless connection. Neuralink says the N1 Link is intended to help people with quadriplegia regain their digital freedom by allowing users to interact with their computers or phones in high bandwidth and natural way.

In a July 2021 blog post, Neuralink announced raising $205 million in their Series C round of funding. Neuralink says this funding will be used to take the N1 Link to market.
