The Day I Learned to Fly
My heart was racing as I pulled into the small airport where my skydiving class would take place. Ever since I was a little girl, the idea of jumping out of a perfectly good airplane had terrified me. Heights were my biggest fear, and the thought of willingly throwing myself from the sky seemed insane. But I was tired of being afraid. I wanted to prove to myself that I could face my fears head-on.
When I arrived, the instructor greeted me with a smile. "Nervous?" he asked. I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. "Don't worry, by the end of the day you'll be jumping out of that plane with a smile on your face." I doubted his words but was determined to try.
We started with ground training, going over all the steps from boarding the plane to exiting it in freefall. I listened intently, soaking up as many details as possible to distract myself from my anxiety. Next came practice with the parachute trainer, simulating the freefall and canopy deployment. Moving my body through the motions helped me feel more in control, even if only slightly.
All too soon, it was time to board the small Cessna that would take us up. I chose a window seat, both wanting and not wanting to watch the ground shrink away below us. My instructor sat beside me, talking me through deep breathing exercises to calm my nerves. Before I knew it, we had reached the designated altitude and it was my turn to jump.
Stepping out of the plane was the single most terrifying moment of my life. As soon as my feet left solid ground, every instinct screamed at me to climb back inside to safety. But I trusted my instructor's steady hands on my harness as he guided me away from the turbulence. "Arch your back and look down," he instructed over the roar of the wind. Slowly, I did as he said.
And that's when it happened - I saw the vast blue sky and puffy white clouds spread out below me in every direction. For the first time, I understood why people did this. An incredible sense of freedom and exhilaration rushed through me, stronger than any fear. I was flying! All thoughts of heights and danger melted away as I enjoyed the ride.
Too soon, it was time to deploy the parachute. My instructor counted it down, and with a sharp jolt I was floating peacefully through the sky. I took a moment to absorb the surreal beauty of my surroundings - the rolling hills and patchwork fields stretching as far as the eye could see. This was a view reserved for birds and those brave enough to jump from airplanes. I couldn't believe I was experiencing it.
We touched down safely in a nearby field, and I collapsed to the ground in a fit of giggles. I had done it - I had faced my greatest fear and come out the other side feeling stronger and more alive than ever before. My instructor smiled knowingly as he gathered our gear. "Welcome to the skydiving club. You'll be back for more, I guarantee it." In that moment, I believed him. The girl who had been afraid of heights had learned to fly. I knew then that if I could jump from an airplane, I was capable of anything.
