MAJAYJAY AND EMILIO JACINTO:
Modesty aside, as one of Majayjay's self -proclaimed historians, if I can call myself such, I browsed upon a news item about a literary tour of the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (KWF) in Majayjay on April 16, 2016 to pay homage to Emilio Jacinto, the Brains of the Katipunan.
It was the last leg of the Literatour in memory of Emilio Jacinto because of his literary writings during the revolution against Spain. The first two of the series started in Orion, Bataan, then in Padacan and Bulacan.
Priscillano Vicado Jr., a sculptor was introduced in the Literatour attended by teachers, cultural workers, and municipal employees of Majayjay. Vicado was commissioned to make the life- size bronze sculpture, with the inscription, Si Jacinto at Inang Kalayaan .This would be installed in Majayjay according to the news item.
I am bringing this to the attention of Mayor Clado and the Sanguniang Bayan for them to follow it up because the Literatour of the KWF happened during Mayor Tino's time, one month before the 2016 elections.
In view of the historical importance of Emilio Jacinto, who wrote under the pen name ( nom de plume) Dimas Ilaw for the KKK's publication, Kalayaan, and penned the Kartilya, the commandments of the Katipunan ; it is highly important that the monument be installed here to magnify our rightful place in history.
I propose that we build a new plaza, where the bronze monument could be installed .
Magandang attraction ito for local tourism, lalo na with the combination of our historical landmarks ( Church, tulay ng Pigue, Ermita and Grotto, Mt.Banahaw ) and organic farming as selling points in promoting Majayjay.
Gaya ng kasabihang, " Success has many fathers, while failure is an orphan ", the towns of Sta. Cruz and Magdalena both claim to be the places where Jacinto died.
Natural lang ito dahil malalagay sila history.
Sa aking research, Majayjay is still recognized by historians and by the Historical Commission as the death place of the Brains of the Katipunan.
Dito siya nagkuta noong panahon ng revolution at namatay sa sakit na Malaria noong April 16, 1899, six days after the death of our town's revolutionary hero, Capt.Pedro Origuel, defending the Capital town of Sta.Cruz against the invading Americans forces of Gen.Henry Lawton.
