What's buzzing, friends!
The Beyond Meat Burger is one of the most popular vegetarian burgers on the market. It's made with non-meat ingredients like pea protein, beet juice, and coconut oil, and it's been known to taste pretty close to the real thing. Even McDonald's now serves a type of Beyond Meat burger called McPlant burgers.
Did you know however, that this is not the first time McDonald's ventured into the plant-based meat burger market? Today, let's go back to the 1960's in the USA.
In America, Catholics do not eat meat on Fridays as part of their faith. McDonald's primary business is in burgers. As such, losing one day a week of sales would be bad for their bottom line, so they went to find a solution. Enter Ray Kroc.
Ray Kroc (McDonald's Corporation founder and former CEO). He introduced the "Hula Burger". This burger was a fat slice of pineapple, cheese on a bun. By all accounts, it looks like a success, but it was rolled out at the same time as the "Filet-O-Fish". Unfortunately, the Hula Burger, the Filet-O-Fish, proved to be more successful, and this plant-based option was no longer offered.
