What's Buzzing Friends...
The 19th century was a very weird place. They had a lot of weird beliefs and lifestyles. For example, many people in this era believed that disease is caused by smell. To avoid getting sick, people would carry small bags of coal around with them. Some people would also cover all the food they cooked in coal to try and keep the smell down. As strange as it seems, this was a common way to avoid getting sick. The 19th century was full of weird things like this.
Today we're a look at one of these notable 19th-century beliefs known as the dreaded, most scary, crippling disease called "Bicycle Face".
Bicycle face occurred if predominantly, a woman rode a bicycle... Here is the description of it.
Over-exertion, the upright position on the wheel, and the unconscious effort to maintain one's balance tend to produce a wearied and exhausted 'bicycle face,'" noted the Literary Digest in 1895. It went on to describe the condition: "usually flushed, but sometimes pale, often with lips more or less drawn, and the beginning of dark shadows under the eyes, and always with an expression of weariness. Source
Yes, this two-wheeled weird ailment only affected women. They would get this crazy face from riding a bike. As absurd as it sounds, a lot of people did believe it at the time. However, do not worry it has been long disproven to be an ailment one can be afflicted with. But rather it was one of the many horrifying ways that were designed to keep women repressed.
At the time while men enjoyed freedom, women did not, the bicycle provided women the ability to have more transportation and more freedom, and gain physical exercise. Men in power felt threatened and released all sorts of crazy ideas to keep their female counterparts repressed. We are glad however that this quickly fell out of fashion and the bicycle has been adopted, and while women are still fighting for equal rights, we're glad that progress is being made!
Speaking of bicycle face, you ever hear of D.Buzz face? No? It's what your face will look like if you don't read this week's updates down below! Doctors say you should read it once a week to keep D.Buzz](https://d.buzz/) face from happening. :)
