What does Pangea and the growth of your fingernails have in common?
Fingernails seem to grow so fast, but in reality, they only grow about 3mm per month. The nails grow from the matrix, which is the base of the nail under the cuticle. The matrix is made up of living cells that produce keratin, which is the complex protein that makes up the nail. The cells in the matrix divide and grow to make the nail longer.
Pangea, the supercontinent, began breaking up about 175 million years ago, and the process is still happening today. The continents are moving away from each other at a rate of a few centimeters per year. The Atlantic Ocean is getting wider every year. The reason for this is the convection currents deep inside the earth. The molten rock in the mantle rises up and pushes the crust aside.

The continents that make up our world are moving at the same speed as your fingernails are growing. BOOM, WHAT?!
Yes, that is right. Pangea broke up long ago and had been moving at a fingernail growth rate per year. So next time you cut your nails, look down at that cut nail bit and then realize the continental plates have also moved about that same amount in that same amount of time.
