What You Are Learning, Does It Work

Sometimes it is seen that in the name of self-defense what is taught is nothing but fake. You might see some crazy magical moves like throwing an opponent without touching and defending with the help of some magical power.

Or, you see some touch and that's it. The opponent is down. There are pressure points and you can strike there. It will have a huge impact. But in the name of pressure points attacks what is shown, that's useless.

When someone is angry, or drunk, he might not feel what he feels in a normal situation. You hit him but it might not have the impact that you expect. Still, the attacker can go ahead and attack you.

Sometimes it happens that you get hurt but you do not feel the pain, later you feel the pain. The same thing can happen in a fight. So what works in a normal situation, it might appear that it does not work. And if that's a fake move, it is certain that it will never work.

When you choose to learn any martial art or self-defense, see whether it helps you to fight in stressful situations. Does that teach you how to make your move to defend and strike from a position of disadvantage? Does their teaching involve sparring?

If you see they never do sparring, that can be a no sign. Sparring is a crucial factor in learning a martial art that cannot be avoided. What you learn, if you make it work to defend yourself, that's all that matters.
