Uncontrolled impulsivity will have its costs.
If you have an impulsive child or know someone who is impulsive then Will Smith has just become a great objective lesson. Imagine. He woke up Sunday morning all but knowing that he was going to be at the pinnacle of his career. Everyone said he was a shoo-in for the best Actor award. After the end of the evening, he would get recognition for all of his talents and efforts.
And it was recognition that was well deserved. As a quasi-fan I watched him grow as an actor. Even in his Fresh Prince TV show you could see that talent was beyond that of a normal rapper. And he made a point to do rap with an uplifting message. His movie acting career blossomed with fantastic performances in Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness. And it would all culminate with his expected award for his role in King Richard.
And he wiped all of that out with a single swing of his hand. As much as I have enjoyed his performances in the past I do not know if I will ever see King Richard. The image of violence he perpetrated will be in the back of my mind. He will probably get more work, but it will be tainted. The accolade he earned through his hard work will never be what it could have been. Because of one impulsive swing of his hand.
Chances are high he will be further punished by the academy. How can they not punish him? If they ever want to say they are against violence they cannot let this stand, or nobody will take them seriously. Add in the fact that he refused to leave when asked and punishment is almost certain to come. Even his award may be at stake.
So, this is a lesson on how our impulsiveness can destroy a lifetime of good work. Smith had time to walk up and hit Rock. He could have reconsidered at any point to turn around or decide not to let his hand swing when he got there. And now he pays the price for it.
I got too impulsive sometimes. But mine is different. Especially when buying something online. I sometimes don't consider. As long as I like it, I'll buy it. And it's a negative thing of me too. Haha
