Covid-19 Pandemic: Whose fault is it?

It's been about 1.5 years since the Covid-19 pandemic has occurred in my country. Starting with the excitement of the discovery of the first case in the city of Depok on March 1, 2020, now the number of daily additional cases is still in the thousands. Even 1 month after Eid al-Fitr, the daily number of cases reached 15000 to 20000 infected people.

In principle, this virus is easy to kill or inactivate in a simple way as long as the virus is outside the body. The COVID-19 virus is very small in size and is an mRNA type virus, which is a virus that can only reproduce if it lives or is attached to its host. Generally, the COVID-19 virus uses wet areas of the nose and respiratory tract as a host. So, outside the human body, this virus cannot reproduce itself. The problem is if this virus manages to enter the nose, either through inhaled air or through hands that accidentally touch a viral object, then touch the nose or mouth, the virus will multiply and cause symptoms in the human body.

Structurally, this virus consists of thin skin (fat) and contents. This skin serves as a tool to attach to the host cell and eat away at it. Viruses without skin, cannot infect host cells. Just as oil or grease on food plates can be cleaned with soap, the skin of this virus can be easily deactivated by washing with soap or other disinfecting agents.

While viruses that stick to objects are deactivated through washing/disinfection, viruses that are still in the air (for example due to the breath/cough of a Covid positive person) are prevented from spreading with appropriate masks and maintaining sufficient distance (2 meters).

How to control the rate of spread of the covid 19 viruses has often been conveyed on TV news, radio, on social media, namely by:

  • Wearing a mask

  • Washing hands

  • Keep the distance

  • Avoid crowds

  • Limiting mobility/movement of people

But in reality, it doesn't work as it should. It's a shame when our brothers and sisters swallow the wrong information. There is a lot of incorrect information circulating on social media or whatsapp groups which are then shared further and result in negligence of health protocols, either intentionally or unintentionally. There is even information that even aims to provoke. Why do most of us trust provocations more than official information and official advice?

In my reflection, humility is an attitude we need to have. Not the time to look for scapegoats, and self-defense. In a language dictionary on the internet, I found the notion of humility, which is not arrogant or arrogant. What is it like not being arrogant or not being arrogant? In this situation, the lack of humility can be seen in each of them, for example:

  • Am I the greatest and most correct?

  • Shall I try to understand what is right without being judgmental?

  • Am I being honest and open or am I getting emotional on my own/group?

  • Do I admit that I am small before God and nothing?

Obedience is one of the fruits of admitting honestly that we are weak/small. We may feel that we have done worship, prayed, worked well, etc. But have we obeyed? Is it possible for us to be obedient to the unseen, while even to the visible we do not want to be governed?

If there is a question, "Who is at fault for this pandemic?", and if we don't find out who it is, maybe we are all at fault.
