Give an important scientific breakthrough of the past 300 years
Science contributed significant accomplishments from the past until now. Several discoveries have led to progress and advancement that we are enjoying these days of our modern time. From theories, curiosity, and even accidental discoveries into series of inventions and innovation. The human mind is one of the most amazing creations enabling us to know various things.
From the past years, discoveries in the field of medicine have been developing rapidly. Several medical equipment are now being utilized and advanced methods are employed to help more people. Moreover, the medicines nowadays are continuously improving its effects to fight against disease or enhance health. In connection with this, one of the most important scientific breakthroughs of the past 300 years is the discovery of Penicillin. At St. Mary's Hospital in London, Alexander Fleming made the discovery of penicillin in 1928. The introduction of antibiotics as a result of this discovery significantly decreased the incidence of infections-related deaths. When Fleming got home from his vacation, he discovered mold on a Petri plate (which he left accidentally) containing Staphylococcus bacterium. He saw that the mold appeared to be stopping the nearby bacteria from growing. He quickly realized that the mold was producing a toxin that might kill germs as a form of self-defense. Peptidoglycan, a substance in the cell wall that gives the wall the strength it needs to live in the human body, is prevented from being synthesized by the bacterium by penicillin.
The question is, do we still use this so-called "wonder drug"? Penicillin is still widely use today. A lot of scientists and researchers did a lot of effort to scale up its production. Although some bacteria already gained resistance from this, there are still numerous bacterial infections that can be treated through penicillin.
