How to Buy Crypto in Canada

For people who are just starting out in the crypto space, a couple of the most commonly asked questions that I see are, "How do I get started?" and, "How do I buy crypto?" These can be tough questions to answer as each country has their own "best" platform where you can buy from, and this is also the case in Canada. In fact, there are well over a dozen places, platforms, websites, and or exchanges where you can buy crypto in Canada. I would know this because I've personally looked at all of these options out there. Along with that, it doesn’t help when your Google search results overwhelm you with countless links. Having said that, my aim of this article is to hopefully get the reader taking away the knowledge or information on how to conveniently, easily, and securely go from money in his or her bank account to owning some crypto within a matter of minutes from some trustworthy and reputable platforms that I think are the “best” in Canada to buy crypto from. Obviously the word “best” is very subjective and that’s why this article is based solely on my opinion.

So there are three sites that I personally trust to buy (and sell) crypto in Canada. These sites are Coinberry, Shakepay, and Newton. An honourable mention platform is Bull Bitcoin but they’re a Bitcoin ONLY platform so that’s why I’ll leave them out of this comparison for now and I'll talk about them after. Just like with anything in our lives, there is no one size fits all and this is the same with these platforms as all three websites have their pros and cons. I will note though that I’ve never had any major problems with any of these websites and I’ve been using them for a long time now.

Here's a comparison chart that I've made highlighting the differences among them:

Just as I said above, each platform has their pros and cons and that the one you decide to sign up with (you can obviously sign up with all three though) will depend on what you value. Some examples of what you might value are price, convenience, coin options, and features such as recurring buys. I hope that the table has been able to give you a better idea on which platform is best for your needs. However, if you're still not sure, check out this video that I made a while ago comparing the differences among these platforms as it may be able to help you out some more.

If you're interested in checking out the most up to date version of the table, you can do so here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Bek8cCnhbUZcZgUGdkHms2UU5SF0XkzOdkdVvdHbFew/edit?usp=sharing

I've also made videos on each platform that you can check out below if you're interested.

NEWTON

COINBERRY

SHAKEPAY

Now I did say that I would address Bull Bitcoin after comparing the three crypto platforms, so I'll talk just a little bit about them as I wouldn't really recommend them for those who are just getting started or who are new to crypto. However, for those who have a bit of basic knowledge on Bitcoin wallets then Bull Bitcoin is a great platform if you're someone who wants a one-stop shop platform to both buy and sell Bitcoin (only). What I really like about them the most is their dollar cost average feature. This is probably by far the most compelling reason as to why you would buy from them. If you're someone who wants to just set and forget your Bitcoin buys, then they're an awesome platform for that. You can even create orders where you buy HOURLY. If you're not sure of what dollar cost averaging is, it's essentially when you buy a specific dollar amount over a regular period of time or interval so that way you can minimize your risk against price fluctuations. So an example would be buying $50 worth of Bitcoin every Saturday regardless of the price. If the price of Bitcoin goes up, you get less. But, if the price of Bitcoin goes down, you get more. Dollar cost averaging is an investment strategy used to help mitigate some risk. If you're still curious or wondering about Bull Bitcoin, I've included a video reviewing them that you can check out.
