It all started when I saw a video about, "The list of Halal foods". I got to know all the creatures from the sea can be eaten and my mind started to taste more of those unknown and rare species.
I bought 1 kilo from a nearby shop and it wasn't much pricy compared to other fishes. The worst thing was I didn't know how to cook a recipe by using those, later I found out a lot of ways to cook from a cookbook. To be specified, it was the fried calamari, which wasn't had some of the ingredients needed to bring out the real flavour.
Squid isn't like any other meat in texture. It's not fibrous and chewy like red meat or chicken, but rather smooth and firm, though not crunchy (maybe the breading if fried, but not the meat itself; you do notice this if boiled or grilled.) As for flavour, I wouldn't know how to describe it; to me, squid is its own flavour. I loved the tentacles because they had a crunchy texture. Chewing the suckers on the tentacles was a bit uneven, it seemed that those would stick to my tongue.
Cause of these characteristics, it goes well with almost everything as much as it almost disappears as a taste if it is not the main star of a plate of its own.
In conclusion, I had a good and different experience but some of the parts were a bit tasteless. They can be rubbery if overcooked and also depends on the seasoning used. Sometimes if they are not cleaned and rinsed well you'll get a fishy smell and taste.
