Koorababa and Teddy

Ever heard of the word security blanket? I am not referring to the security blanket you get from a business deal or in a relationship. I am talking more of these specific type of behaviour that is find mostly in kids or sometimes even in adults. They say it’s psychological but most children overcome them when they grow up. Most of those who cling to these security blankets are those who does not have siblings or there are no other kids nearby to play with them. Some of them even resort to having their own imaginary friend.

She calls her friend “Koorababa”. Whenever she plays alone, she would always mention that name as her playmate. She was 2 years old that time when she created that friend and it was only when she started going to pre-school that she was able to let go and finally forgot about her Koorababa.

When my daughter was still a toddler, I don`t remember her resorting to a comfort object. With my niece, Xatia, it was a stuffed toy kitten. She had it when she was a baby and she can’t sleep without clinging to it. For the past years, it became so dirty and rugged and we tried a lot of times to change it with a new toy, even a stuffed toy kitten that looked the same but still she wouldn’t let go of her old one. We would wash that favorite toy of hers and she would always check from time to time if it’s already dry.

Unlike Xatia who let go of her Koorababa when she joined pre school, NJ hasn’t gone to school yet because of the ongoing pandemic. NJ has a stuffed teddy bear that he carries everywhere. He calls it Teddy. NJ also shares his food and feeds Teddy. Same thing with Xatia before, even if we gave NJ a new and nicer toy, he will always choose the worn out, torn but sewn Teddy.
