Ripple Labs, Inc. has filed trademarks for two new product lines.
The first trademark, Ripplex, describes a payments system that seems to be aimed at general users. Notably, the service can be used to send monetary gifts, suggesting a PayPal-like peer-to-peer payments service.
Electronic financial services, namely, monetary services for receiving and disbursing remittances and monetary gifts in fiat currencies and virtual currencies over a computer network and for exchanging fiat currencies and virtual currencies over a computer network.
The second trademark, Ripple Impact, describes an initiative that will be used for charity and fundraising efforts:
Charitable foundation services, namely, providing fundraising activities, supplemental funding, capital improvement funding, scholarships and financial assistance for programs and services of others in the field of financial technology.
Though Ripple has not confirmed the products, it seems likely that they will come to fruition given that the trademarks describe very specific plans. However, because the trademarks are quite new, it may be some time before Ripple makes an official announcement.
These developments are important because Ripple has traditionally targeted enterprise users and financial institutions. If these trademarks are accurate, Ripple could be moving into consumer services.
