Justice For Bella | A Victim of Abuse

Two court cases have recently dominated the news, and both are related to abuse. The first case is happening here in Malaysia and is so horrific that I have to avoid reading about it because it could become an anxiety trigger for me. If you google "Justice for Bella" it will return at least eight search results pages related to this case.

Who is Bella? Bella is an orphan abused by her guardian since 2021. Bella is a child with Down syndrome. Her case came to light when some social workers visited her guardian's residence. They were shocked to discover she was covered in open wounds with pus all over her body. You can read about her case in this article. Please be warned. It contains graphic images that may upset some viewers. Many news outlets cover her case and are available online for anyone to read.

Bella was badly abused. These were some of the torture she had to endure:

• She was forced to eat her own feces

• Beaten with a cloth hanger

• Splashed with hot water

• Forced into isolation in a room

• Forced to eat chillis

What kind of human being would do that to a disabled child? This person is no human but a demon straight from the belly of hell!

When the case first came to light, Malaysians were extremely appalled by her condition. Many Malaysians expressed their anger on social media and demanded the police haul her guardian to court. The tag #justiceforbella has been trending on social media since 2021.

Her guardian was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment or a RM50,000 (USD11652) fine, or both if convicted. She pleaded not guilty to two counts of abandonment and abusing Bella. The trial is a hot topic among Malaysians almost on daily basis. I hope justice will be served swiftly, and Bella will be taken care of in a loving home for the rest of her life. The Social Welfare Department is taking care of her while her case is still pending in court.

I wonder what made her guardian abuse her? Why hate Bella so much? And if she couldn't take care of her anymore because of her special needs, why didn't she seek help from the social welfare department? What benefit did she gain from torturing the child and seeing her dying? What sick individual can sleep at night after knowing the evil things she did to a defenseless girl? Only a PSYCHOPATH will do this kind of thing.

The effect of abuse has been well researched. Repeated abuse has long-lasting traumatic effects such as sleep disturbances, flashbacks, panic attacks, depression, and psychosomatic symptoms. The victims experience a myriad of emotions such as shame, guilt, abandonment, humiliation, and an enhanced sense of vulnerability. It has already been reported that Bella couldn't sleep and screamed in terror at night. She could be suffering from PTSD.

The court trial is a long and arduous process. But no matter how long it takes, I hope actions must be taken, and justice must prevail!
