Have you ever watched “Marathon Man”?
This film is based on a novel by the same name. The movie was released in 1976 and at that time, Dustin Hoffman was an American actor and his popularity was rising. Sir Laurence Olivier was already a seasoned British Shakespearean actor and his part as an evil war criminal must have been a piece of cake for him to perform. He really played his part well. I have to give credit though and say that Dustin Hoffman rose to the challenge of being on par with this great actor.
Dustin Hoffman is Thomas "Babe" Levy. His brother and father both die. They have a past that Babe doesn't know anything about. What does he know about spies? He's just a young guy in college, training to be a marathon runner.
Laurence Olivier is Christian Szell, a Nazi war criminal who is living in hiding, who has a large cache of diamonds that he is trying to find, so that at least he can live the rest of his hidden life in luxury and comfort.
Szell goes after Babe (Dustin Hoffman) because HE THINKS that before his brother died, he must have told Babe all about the diamonds! Talk about throwing a sheep to a ravenous wolf. This poor kid gets entangled in an international conspiracy and has to defend himself against the worst type of villain: a heartless greedy war criminal who has no intentions of paying for his crimes.
This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat. Not only is Szell a ruthless war criminal, but he has a “gift” for knowing how to torture people to get information from them. It's been years since I've watched this movie but I will never forgot that scene of Babe in the dentist chair, being interrogated by Szell. NEVER!
