Here are eight (8) movies to introduce beginners or newbies to the wonderful world of Bollywood.
(1)♦ Karam (2005)
STARS: John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra Jonas
PLOT: Drama. A young married couple should be able to lead a fairy tale “happily ever after” lifestyle. If only the husband wasn’t a paid contract killer; a bad guy who made some other bad guys really angry. It made their lives really complicated.
(2)♦ Fashion (2008)
STARS: Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Kangana Ranaut
PLOT: A young woman pursues her dream of being a top fashion model, making sacrifices and bad decisions, along the way to get to the top. If you love the glitz and glamour of the fashion industry, and watching beautiful models strut their stuff on the cat walk, you’ll love this movie.
(3)♦ Yuvvraaj (2008)
STARS: Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, and Katrina Kaif
PLOT: There were lighthearted moments in this film. But there was nothing funny about the storyline. There are 3 brothers. One brother is mentally challenged and when the father dies, he leaves all the money to this son. The other 2 brothers, who feel that have been cheated, scheme to try to get the inheritance from their innocent brother. The soundtrack for this movie is absolutely magical!! Anil Kapoor’s singing performances will blow you away!!
(4)♦ Dostana (2008)
STARS: Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra Jonas
PLOT: A romantic comedy. Two guys need to rent an apartment at a complex in Miami, Florida USA with one catch. They have to be gay. They pretend to be gay, sign the lease, and their roommate is hot young heterosexual female that both of them fall for; only she doesn’t know it because she thinks they’re gay. The movie is cute and funny!
(5)♦ What’s Your Raashee? (2009)
STARS: Harman Baweja and Priyanka Chopra Jonas
PLOT: A romantic comedy. A guy needs to find a wife or lose his inheritance. He decides to choose his bride according to her “raashee” (her astrological sign). Another movie with an awesome soundtrack.
(6)♦ 7 Khoon Maaf (2011)
STARS: Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Neil Nitin Mukesh, and Irrfan Khan
PLOT: A serious drama. The film is called “7” because the woman has seven husbands. Each time she marries, she is certain the man she chose will be her soulmate for life. It doesn’t work out and she conveniently becomes a widow, albeit she is never charged with any crime. In the end, she does find her soulmate. To be fair, the other six had it coming.
(7)♦ Mary Kom (2014)
STARS: Priyanka Chopra Jonas
PLOT: Based on a true story. Mary Kom is an Indian woman who opened a door for others to walk through. Boxing for women is hard … in America. Boxing for women IN INDIA? Seriously? My Indian sisters are truly on their own. Any woman who can rise up and make her mark in that field of sports … the world should know her story.
(8)♦ Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006)
STARS: Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta
PLOT: This Bollywood movie was considered controversial in India because of the adultery depicted and because there was some nudity. Nevertheless, “It became the highest-grossing Indian film of all time overseas at the time of its release.” (Source: Wikipedia). Two married couples ultimately realized they had married the wrong person for the wrong reason. By the time they found the "right" mate, they could not enjoy a happy relationship without causing pain and distress, to themselves nd to their marriage partners.
NOTE: Truthfully? IF this film were a true story, i.e. based on real-life events, I would not have liked it.. In the movie, these people were all adults who made bad life-changing decisions, on their own, and then tried to backtrack to fix everything. Frankly. all of their pain and emotional distress could have been avoided. The ending is totally unrealistic. In reality, adultery seldom ends with all affected parties reconciling and carrying on with their lives ... AS IF! But hey! It’s a movie! Without the pain and emotional distress, there really wouldn’t have been much of a plot.
