A subjective film of sounds and silences. Searching for the profound meaning of things starting from a loss, that of hearing for a drummer. The loss of rhythm, of the spatial dimension, of identity, of balance. Only then to discover that the sounds and noises around, were nothing but chaos to confuse the inner need, silenced by the 'stillness' of peace, of tranquility.
The lack is not an anomaly but an opportunity to recover the essential, recalculate the path, reconsider priorities. Free yourself from the superstructures and meet the innermost self. Learning to be deaf: skimming the ambient sounds to hear the vibrations of the soul, waves that propagate in the metal hitting a steel slide, describing intimate connections between distant planets.
Ruben Stone is a drummer, part of the metal duo "Blackgammon", along with his singer and girlfriend, Lou. Their life is made up of travel and music but one day Ruben realizes that he no longer hears anything and following further medical checks he is diagnosed with hearing loss. Being an addict on the mend, Ruben is tempted to fall back into the drug tunnel and attends a rehabilitation community, waiting to find the money for the sound system cost. The system, however, does not help to distinguish loud noises such as those of live music and the protagonist will be convinced, after a long time and interior contrasts, to accept what is his new life.
Mute to change, mute to change and really feel what the world sounds like.
Sound of metal is a meditative and rebalancing film. An earthquake that draws new geographies, the storm that follows apparent calm and precedes a more genuine, truer calm. The loss of the compass that leads to the discovery of new routes.
The viewer is inside the protagonist's head, he 'does not hear' with his own ears, experiences the same turmoil and, finally, seeks the same silence, although he has become more familiar than sounds ever were. The shelter from the world, being in the world.
The reflective and spiritual intimacy (far from any type of creed or faith or mystical-religious value) delicately overwhelms and involves the viewer, thanks not only to the director's eye which is a probe in the human soul but above all to the superlative interpretation of Riz Ahmed speaking with his eyes. Furthermore, and not surprisingly, the entire soundtrack of sounds, effects, noises and music is very important.

Un film di suoni e silenzi in soggettiva. Di ricerca del senso profondo delle cose a partire da una perdita, quella dell’udito per un batterista. La perdita del ritmo, della dimensione spaziale, dell’identità, dell’equilibrio. Salvo poi scoprire che i suoni e i rumori intorno, non erano che caos a confondere il bisogno interiore, messo a tacere di ‘stillness’ di pace, di tranquillità.
La mancanza non è un’anomalia ma l’occasione per recuperare l’essenziale, ricalcolare il percorso, riconsiderare le priorità. Liberarsi dalle sovrastrutture e incontrare l’io più recondito. Imparare ad essere sordo: scremare i suoni d’ambiente per sentire le vibrazioni dell’anima, onde che si propagano nel metallo percuotendo uno scivolo di acciaio, descrivendo intime connessioni tra pianeti distanti.

La loro vita è fatta di viaggi e musica ma un giorno Ruben si accorge di non sentire più nulla e a seguito di ulteriori controlli medici gli è diagnosticato la perdita dell'udito. Essendo inntossicodipendente in via di guarigione, Ruben è tentato di ricadere nel tunnel della droga e frequenta una comunità di recupero, in attesa di trovare i soldi per il costo impianto acustico. L'impianto però non aiuta a distinguere i rumori forti come quelli della musica live ed il protagonista si convincerà, dopo molto tempo e contrasti interiori, ad accettare ciò quella che è la sua nuova vita.
Mutare per mutare, silenziare per cambiare e sentire davvero come suona il mondo.
Sound of metal è un film meditativo e riequilibrante. Un terremoto che disegna nuove geografie, la tempesta che segue la calma apparente e precede una calma più genuina, più vera. La perdita della bussola che porta alla scoperta di nuove rotte.
Lo spettatore è dentro la testa del protagonista, ‘non sente’ con le sue stesse orecchie, vive gli stessi tumulti e, infine, cerca lo stesso silenzio, per quanto gli è diventato più familiare di quanto non lo fossero mai stati i suoni. Il riparo dal mondo, stando nel mondo.
L’intimità riflessiva e spirituale (lontana da ogni tipo di credo o fede o valenza mistico-religiosa) travolge delicatamente e coinvolge lo spettatore, grazie non solo all’occhio registico che è una sonda nell’animo umano ma soprattutto alla superlativa interpretazione di Riz Ahmed che parla con gli occhi. Importantissima, inoltre e non a caso, tutta la colonna sonora di suoni, effetti, rumori e musiche.
Vale la candidatura agli Oscar e pure la statuetta.
