AIDS, or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, is a disease caused by HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus), a particular virus which, if left untreated, leads to death within a few years. The virus lowers the immune defenses of our body and favors the onset of lethal inflammations and tumors. The disease is quite unknown until the 80's when the number of cases of infections and deaths grows exponentially around the world.
The virus is transmitted through sexual intercourse or blood exchanges, and many infections occurred mainly among drug addicts due to the common use of the same syringe. AIDS is also considered with the disease of homosexuals because transmission via anal intercourse is the easiest route for the virus to enter the human body as the intestinal mucosa is less effective than the vaginal one, which creates a more acidic and harder for HIV to survive.
The most famous victim of this infamous disease was Freddy Mercury, the lead singer of Queen, the historic pop-rock group of reference in the 70s and 80s. The singer announced his disease to the public just before he died of a serious lung infection.
The singer's death has lit a beacon in the world of medicine that has definitely increased laboratory studies and created increasingly efficient drugs that today allow AIDS patients to lead a regular life and a life forecast almost similar to the world average. This news is absolutely incredible, there have been millions of AIDS sufferers over the past decades and today life expectancy has improved significantly. It was also observed that the percentage of infected people in industrialized countries has dropped sharply while it is necessary to continue working in the poorest countries, spreading the use of condoms to avoid possible infections.
AIDS was initially considered a disease of the lower class, belonging to drug addicts and homosexuals and many patients of high social class feared being accused by society, so they refused to be treated and therefore expose themselves to public opinion. Today the approach to the disease has definitely changed, taking some drugs also lowers the transmissibility of the virus, making it inactive and under control. Information and precaution are essential to minimize the risk of contagion.

L'AIDS, o Acquired immune deficiency sindrome, è una malattia provocata dal HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) un particolare virus che se non curato porta alla morte nell'arco di qualche anno. Il virus abbassa le difese immunitarie del nostro corpo e favorisce l'insorgere di infiammazioni letali e tumori. La malattia è abbastanza sconosciuta fini agli 80 quando il numero dei casi di infezioni e decessi cresce esponenzialmente in tutto il mondo.
Il virus è trasmissibile tramite rapporto sessuale o scambi di sangue, e molte infezioni avvenivano soprattutto tra tossicodipendenti a causa dell'utilizzo comune della stessa siringa. L'AIDS è considerato anche con la malattia degli omosessuali perché la trasmissione tramite rapporti anali è la strada più facile per il virus di penetrazione nel corpo umano in quanto la mucosa intestinale è meno efficace rispetto a quella vaginale, che crea un ambiente più acido e più difficile per HIV da da sopravvivere.
La vittima più celebre di questa infame malattia è stata Freddy Mercury, il cantante dei Queen, storico gruppo pop-rock di riferimento negli anni 70 e 80. Il cantante annunció al pubblico la sua malattia poco prima di morire per una grave infezione polmonare.
La morte del cantante ha acceso un faro nel mondo della medicina che ha decisamente incrementato gli studi di laboratorio e creato farmaci sempre più efficienti che oggi consentono ai pazienti di AIDS di condurre una vita regolare ed una previsione di vita quasi simile alla media mondiale. Questa notizia è decisamente incredibile, gli affetti da AIDS sono stati milioni nel corso di questi decenni e oggi l'aspettativa di vita è nettamente migliorata. Si è inoltre osservato che la percentuale di persone infette nei paesi industrializzati è nettamente calata mentre è necessario continuare a lavorare nei paesi più poveri, diffondendo l'utilizzo di preservativi per evitare possibili infezioni.
L'AIDS inizialmente era considerato una malattia del basso ceto, appartenente ai drogati e omosessuali e molti pazienti di alto ceto sociale temevano di essere accusati dalla società, per cui rifiutavano di curarsi ed esporsi quindi all'opinione pubblica. Oggi l'approccio alla malattia è decisamente cambiato, l'assunzione di alcuni farmaci abbassa anche la trasmissibilità del virus, rendendolo inattivo e sotto controllo. L'informazione e la precauzione è fondamentale per ridurre al minimo il rischio di contagio.
