7 minutes, Michele Placido, 2016

The social issues of the female working class, the rights to be defended at any cost (but what cost and to what extent?), The responsibility of individuals in favor of groups. The collective actions that make the great giants tremble, the system that does not exist because it is the sum of the individualities.

Inspired by true facts, Stefano Massini's screenplay in Michele Placido's film (before that, a theatrical show directed by Alessandro Gassman) in the form of a one-location movie puts the viewer - together with the protagonists - in front of unanswered questions. Doubts of moral ethics and civil and social responsibility. Employers vs workers, society vs the individual, the personal good vs the common good.

Wuld you have done?

Thus the mechanism of the court is set in motion: a fact, the defense, the accusation, the theses with supporting arguments, the jury, the debate, the verdict.

All very interesting, very delicate themes, always open questions, always evolving answers and stories that teach but not always and never enough.

Having said that, Placido, however, crosses over and in the second part of the film the sermons multiply, the paternalistic monologues of the protagonists take on such falsely moralistic connotations, which are annoying. You can feel - in disguise - almost the desire (of the director and also of the writer) to make judgments from above, without getting your hands dirty and the mood of superhero 'woke' takes away credibility from what you say and listen to. To give the final blow is the conclusion with the pompous epic tones and the appearance of a tambourine that accompanies mass scenes, from the Taranta night, which seem to betray Placido's will to emphasize his Apulian origins. All noticeably out of context. The reason for the artistic choice - inevitably debatable - is not known.

Beautiful music by Paolo Buonvino. The interpretations - except for some peaks - always leave a sense of incompleteness and superficiality in the approach of the actresses, actors and director to the text and motivation of the story. But this - alas - is a flaw that is the common thread in many contemporary Italian cinema productions (even the unsuspected ones).

7 minuti, Michele Placido, 2016
