Chicago Marathon organizers confirmed on Monday, July 13, that this year's race had been canceled due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.
A statement said the race, scheduled for October 11, had been shelved after a decision by organizers and the City of Chicago.
Chicago's decision had been largely expected, with several other major marathons around the world already suffering the same fate.
The announcement came a month after Boston canceled its marathon for the first time in the event's 124-year history.
TheNew York City marathon was also canceled as well as the Berlin Marathon in a bid to halt the spread of COVID-19
The London Marathon has been postponed until October 4, while the Tokyo Marathon was held with a reduced field of elite runners.
