FIFA President Gianni Infantino has come under fire for his comments about the positive impact of hosting the World Cup every two years.

In this regard, the FIFA president said: "We need to find global ways to give hope to Africans, so they will not need to cross the Mediterranean to search, perhaps for a better life or more likely to die at sea.

According to the International Organization for Migration, 1,315 people fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa and the Middle East died while trying to cross the Mediterranean last year.

Ronan Evian, CEO of the European Football Supporters' Association, expressed his outrage at Infantino's comments, calling them "disgusting".

Evian said, in statements carried by the "Reuters" news agency, that Infantino is an unsuitable person to manage world football.

Infantino later said in his speech to the Council of Europe on Human Rights that his comments were "misunderstood" and that he meant that football "could help improve the situation of people around the world".

"In my speech, my general message was that everyone in decision-making positions has a responsibility to help improve the lives of people around the world," he explained.

He continued: "If there are more opportunities available, including Africa, but not limited to this continent, this should help people to obtain these opportunities in their country, it is a general comment."

It is noteworthy that the idea of ​​playing the World Cup every two years instead of four years has sparked great controversy, and Infantino is trying to obtain the support of national federations, saying that this change will add revenue of 4.4 billion dollars to FIFA.
