Just under 28% of respondents said they rent movies online. Looking at a few scenarios, it is clear which method tends to be cheaper. For people who said they only watch 1 to 3 films per month, the savings from renting online are small. Renting 2 movies per month at the local video store would cost about $7.40 on average, while renting from Netflix, for example, would cost $5.99 if one opted for the plan with a limit of 2 movies per month.
Purchasing a Video
After purchasing a video at the local video store, the user would have overnight or perhaps a week to return the film, whereas with an online rental they can keep it for an unlimited time. For those who indicated that they watch 1-3 films per week, the savings would be even greater. For example, renting 8 movies per month would cost about $29.55 at the local shop and as little as $14.99 online if they chose the "2 movies at a time" option or $17.99 for the "3 movies at a time" option.
Movies Cost
As usage increases, so does the likelihood of greater savings. For those who responded that they watch 4 movies per week (an average of 16 per month), the average cost at the local shop would be $59.04, while renting online would cost $23.99 if the user rented "4 at a time". Renting through a service such as Netflix does not usually limit the number of films viewed, but rather the number of films that can be rented at any given time. Therefore, renting is more or less unlimited with many tariffs.
Rending Films
The second most frequently cited reason for not using online film rental services was that individuals rented films spontaneously and did not plan in advance. When renting films online and receiving them by post, individuals cannot decide at 6pm that they want to watch The Queen and receive the film so that they can watch it at 8pm. However, the time limit for receiving films selected by post is only one working day, which should be sufficient in most cases.
Downloading service
The service should be faster than most download services, as streaming allows viewing of the film while it is being streamed, rather than waiting until the download is complete. While it will take some time to fully transition from the current postal service to a download service, it is clear that the immediacy will continue to improve. It is likely that other online film rental services will follow suit in the coming years in order to compete. Consumers who are not yet initiated into the world of online movie rental may also not be aware of the other benefits/features of such services.
Typical video
Wider selection - A typical video store has 10,000 to 15,000 titles on offer, whereas Netflix's online movie rental service offers over 80,000 titles. This seems to eliminate the problem of consumers coming to the video store and finding that there is nothing there that they really want to watch. There are no delivery and return fees for DVDs, and there is no need to drive to and from the shop, as the films are delivered to the doorstep or home via streaming.
