This programme is about environmental science with an international character. At Avans University of Applied Sciences, we follow a project-based approach. This means in addition to attending classes, you will benefit from working with students from all over the world in several projects and training sessions.

The topics covered in this programme are diverse. You will get to learn about sustainable energy techniques, bio-based waste management, environmental pollution and cleanup technology, cost-benefit analyses, stakeholder analyses and environmental law and policy.

Given our diverse student population, you will learn in an international environment and approach every topic from an global perspective.

Through internationally oriented projects, training and courses, you will learn about subjects including sustainable energy techniques, bio-based waste management, biomimetics, clean-up technologies, cost-benefit analysis, environmental policy and law.

You can specialise by choosing 1 of 2 study tracks, enabling you to pursue a career in sustainable energy & resources recovery or water management, climate & ecosystems.

The four year programme will deepen your knowledge with subjects such as Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Ecology. Through various projects and courses, you will learn about sustainable energy techniques, their suitability in specific situations, bio-based waste management, environmental pollution and cleanup technology, cost-benefit analyses, stakeholder analyses and also environmental policy and law. Given the international character of the student group, you will learn about these subjects in relation to different parts of the world.

During the 3rd and 4th year, you will have the opportunity to go abroad for internship, and graduation projects at an international company, research institute, environmental organization or join our research group.

Features of this study programme

Lecturers and staff members are highly qualified. Our approach is personal. You will work in small groups. A personal coach and study counselor will give you plenty of guidance. The programme is ranked number 1 in the two main higher education ranking systems in the Netherlands for five consecutive year now. The atmosphere is friendly and open. The composition of the student group extends from Europe to Africa, America and Asia. The projects come from the professional field, so you will be handling real problems and data.

Continuing studies

The job opportunities after you graduate are excellent. You could, for instance, join a government agency where you would develop and implement environmental policies. Or you might target an Environment, Health and Safety job in industry. Or maybe you would prefer to work in an environmental consultancy where assignments range from technical solutions to environmental licensing or policy-making. After this programme, you can also apply for a post-graduate programme leading to a Master of Science degree (MSc). For eample at research universities in Wageningen, Utrecht, Maastricht or Stockholm. Potential Careers:


Consultant

Clients ranging from municipalities to industries and companies want to have a problem solved. Possible issues include soil investigation, energy reduction and air quality management.

Policy development officer in a government agency
You work for a government agency where you have to determine how the government can achieve certain environmental goals. You also have to monitor implementation of the policy proposed and check whether you achieve the goals.

Environmental licensing officer in a government agency
Many industrial activities require an environmental licence. You work for the government to produce the environmental licence for a specific company. Or you check the company to see whether it meets the licensing requirements.

Environment-Health-Safety Officer
You work in industry. You are responsible for a safe working environment for the employees of the company. You also have to make sure the company works within the boundaries of its environmental licence. You keep pushing the company to develop more sustainable production techniques.

Water Board enforcement officer
You work for a government agency or a water board. You may be involved in water treatment techniques or in managing water quality and quantity.
