This is an ancient Lazzaretto (named so from Lazarus the beggar). It has existed since 6 centuries and it was the place to isolate infected people or used as a quarantine station for maritime travelers. From a nearby tower soldiers could check who was trying to escape, in this case there was the death penalty. The old times. But during this covid pandemic, is it not the same for the travelers, since they need to do a quarantine? The old times meeting the new ones! 😣
