Chelsea FC to rename Stamford Bridge
Did you know that that bastion of southern Eng-er-land Eng-er-land, Stamford Bridge, home of Chelsea FC, actually commemorates a battle in the north of England, and was between rival Scandinavian forces for domination of the English?
It's true!
The victor was Harald Godwinson over Harald Hardrada and Harald’s brother Tostig (how very British these names, no?).
Their father, Godwin—a leading earl under the Danish and 'English' king Cnut [tut tut, naughty] —was son of Wulfnoth and married Gytha, sister of another Danish earl, Ulf. So really, it was like a Danish war carried out overseas, so as not to damage the Danish landscape with all the fighting and so forth.
King Cnut, for his part, had a sister Estrid who may have been the eminence gris par excellence https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estrid_Svendsdatter , being not alone the Danish queen, but Russian princess too and duchess of Normandy by marriage.
But back to the football and the tribalism:
All those Chelsea headhunters who consider themselves the most English of English fans might want to consider renaming their stadium!
