My POV of how should we write history in the Philippines
Part 1
History has been taught since we are in elementary, we learned from school about the battle of Mactan, where Lapu-Lapu was courageously and fearlessly fought for the Philippines they overpowered and defeated the Spanish force fighting under the command of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan who claimed as the one who discovered the Philippines in 1521, we also know about Antonio Luna who is well known as the General who fought the Philippine–American War and regarded as one of the fiercest generals, of course, we will never forget how Andres Bonifacio who also courageously lead and founded that so-called the Katipunan and started the Philippine revolution for the Spanish colonial rule.
We all know the heroic deeds of every hero who fought for the Philippines and was written on Philippine history, historians help us to be able to know the history of the Philippines, but the reason why I mentioned those heroes is because of what I realized after reading the article of Renato Constantino Sr. which is entitled "TOWARDS A PEOPLE'S HISTORY".
Constantino define and explained that "History is not merely a chronology of events, it is not the story of heroes and the great men. Essentially, history consists of the people's efforts to attain a better life".
Constantino main argument in his article is that history shouldn't be written based on individuals struggles to attain a better society, history shouldn't be written only from the point of view of leaders, heroes, and great men, as I mentioned at the beginning since we were in elementary we were taught about how general Antonio Luna fought for the Philippine-American War and was recognized as one of the Philippine heroes until now, but it shouldn't be that way, general Luna wouldn't be a hero or wouldn't win that battle without its people who fought behind him, as Constantino says that,” it is the people who make or unmake heroes”.
Yes, it is true that without those leaders the people can't fight as one and cannot win a battle, leaders play a greater role when it comes to any types of battle but we shouldn't forget that without its people, there is no reason to fight at all, without its people you can't win a battle, that is why writing history is not just about the great men, leaders, and heroes, but it's all about the people and how they struggle, fight and died to achieve a better life.
