 Side Story 2 (Pt.3)

“Not good… they’re just ploughing through all the obstacles and illusions. Forget stopping them, they’re not even being slowed down.”

A grim expression was painted on Yggdra’s face as he watches the four intruders breaking all obstacles and illusions she had put beforehand. No… to be precise, it was the man that looks like a jester that was doing all the work; the other three was just there for the ride.

What truly terrifying though was the fact that the mysterious jester was barely putting in any effort at all. It was as if he’s not taking her seriously.

“Just who is that person? Earlier, that person discovered that I was spying on them. I thought he was just really good at sensing other people's mana but there might be more to it…” Yggdra thought with deep frown on her forehead.

“Yggdra?” Bristle who had fully recovered from his injury looked worriedly at his friend. Never before did the monster pup saw Yggdra looking so serious.

Yggdra turned towards her friend with a wry smile on her face, “We might have to go out there and face them in battle.” she said.

“They’re that strong?”

Black looked towards the worried tree spirit and asked with a solemn expression.

“Yes… unfortunately, none of the obstacles and illusions I prepared beforehand had any effect on them.” answered Yggdra.

“I see… then let us fight. Since they’ve ignored your warning, they can’t complain even if they’re killed.” Black declared with a dark expression. Although Black didn’t blame Yggdra to what happened to her child earlier, it doesn’t mean that the monstrous wolf would be forgiving to those who had harmed Bristle.

Now that the three dared to return despite the warning, they only have themselves to blame if they lose their lives.

Hearing Black’s words, a harsh expression appeared on the tree spirit’s angel-like face. Although she never liked killing, it doesn’t mean that she’s not capable of it. That said, Yggdra’s power was not fit for direct combat.

Being originally a tree, she was good at nature magic and illusion but could not use elemental spells. Fortunately, she could use her nature magic to buff others, or heal their injuries. As for offense, she could use all of the plants and trees around her to attack her enemies.

That should be enough in normal circumstances but Yggdra was not wholly sure if that would be enough to stop the jester-like man. For some reason, Yggdra felt a weird power from him.

“It was similar to my father and master, Chaos but also a different. How should I describe it… the source of power seemed to be equal... but if my master’s power was neutral then the power I felt from the jester-like man was more sinister?”

Speaking of power.... Yggdra has yet to master the abilities she gained from the second awakening of her seed. If she was given more time, then the jester-like man would pose no threat to her. Even if she couldn’t defeat him, the man wouldn’t be able to harm her as well.

“If only big sis Rennel was here… if she were then that jester-like man wouldn’t be our match at all.” Yggdra thought that it was shame that Rennel was not here right now. Because if she were then she wouldn’t need to fear the enemy. “No… I shouldn’t defend on other people to solve my problem. Master wanted to me to grow to my full potential, and that wouldn’t happen if I’m always being protected.”

Yggdra looked at Black and nodded her head. Although she’s unsure if the two of them were enough to block, she should at least give it a try.

“Mother, Yggdra… let me fight too!”

Bristle protested after noticing that his mother and friend were not planning to let him join the fighting. Although he was still a pup, his courage was not lacking. As the offspring of two monster king, Bristle would never hide from those who wished harm on him and his loved ones.

“”No!””

Black and Yggdra spoke at the same time when they heard Bristle’s words. The pup might be a monster king in the making but he’s still too immature and weak. If they were just fighting against the three people that trespassed earlier then they might agree as Bristle was no weaker than the three. But with the jester-like man present, there’s no way that they could allow Bristle to join the fight.

“But why?! I’m not afraid of them!” Bristle was furious. Why won’t they allow him to fight with them? He might be young but he’s no weakling.

“Calm down, Bristle. I know that you’re a very brave boy but the enemy is very tricky. To be honest, not even I or your mother is confident in beating that person.” Yggdra explained with a helpless expression on her face.

Bristle’s puppy eyes widened in shock after hearing that both his mother and friend has no confidence in defeating their opponent and calmed down. He understood that if the two of them was not confident with obtaining victory, then what hope does he have?

“This… no, I understand. I’ll wait here with you, and won’t put myself in danger.” Bristle declared with a serious expression.

The eyes of Black and Yggdra softened after Bristle agreed not to join the fight. Although often rowdy, Bristle can be very mature too if needed be. With Bristle deciding not cause trouble for them anymore; Black and Yggdra could now concentrate on the coming battle.

With the help of the envoy, the acolytes were able to easily bypass any obstacle they came across. But even the unpredictable envoy has to stop when Black appeared before them.

“This is as far as you’ll go,” Black declared as she looked down on the four members of the Sect of the Void.

“Oh ho~ A talking wolf monster that’s black as night – a night wolf king, I presumed?” The jester-like Conrad stared back at the Black with delight. Although the monstrous wolf was incredibly big and intimidating, Conrad was not showing any sign of fear at all.

The three acolytes on the other hand were not so calm. On the contrary, they were terrified. Due the difference in level, the three acolytes could feel the great pressure that Black emits. If not for the the envoy, the three of them would have run away already.

“This is a monster king? Why is it so powerful? It’s more terrifying than the other monster king we came across before!”

It’s not the first time that the three acolytes came face-to-face with a monster king. No, they have meet and even fought other monster kings. But the night wolf king in front of them far surpassed any of the monster kings that came before it!

“Monster king, monster king, where is the spirit? Is she hiding?” asked the jester-like Conrad in weird manner.

“No need to look for her… I should be enough,” Black declared coldly.

“Oh really?”

The moment the envoy said those words, the surrounding suddenly changed. What’s more, the three acolytes and the Black disappeared!

“Hoh~ Is this your plan spirit?” asked Conrad in an amuse tone.

No one answered the envoy’s question. Instead, roots from the nearby trees attacked the jester-like envoy en masse!

While the envoy Conrad was fending off the offense from the roots, Black was facing off against the three paled-faced acolytes. Although the Yggdra’s ‘Shifting’ ability didn’t work on the envoy for some reason, it has no problem shifting the three acolytes to other parts of the forest.

“Why do you look at us in that way, monster king?” the stern man wearing black furred jacket asked with a deep frown on his face.

“That’s a strange question? Do you expect me to look kindly at you three after you’ve hurt my child?” asked Black in a tone laden with sarcasm.

“What? Since when did we hurt your child….”

The woman in glasses wanted to deny the accusation but upon remembering what happened just a few days ago, her face paled even more. Indeed… when the Locator was stolen from her hand, the purple-robed man fired lightning magic indiscriminately. After that they heard a yelp of pain from somewhere.

Could it be?

Upon realizing this, the furred jacket wearing man and the woman with glasses instinctively turned their eyes towards the purple-robed man and cursed inwardly.

“That’s, that’s an accident! My body simply reacted instinctively!” the purple-robed man argued vehemently while sweating buckets.

“It no longer matters whether it’s an accident or not. What important is that you’re my enemy. Fight and let your abilities speak. If you win you lived, if you lose then this forest would be your graveyard.”

Monsters like were often Black very straightforward with their feelings. For them it’s either friend or foe. This was especially true if monsters are facing humans. Black might be on the neutral side when it comes to dealing with humans but that doesn’t mean that she’s harmless.

If she felt that the humans are threat to her or her pup’s survival then she would not hesitate to fight and kill them. The only reason Black didn’t harm the villagers of Fahl village was because she didn’t consider them a threat. But when Rennel showed herself to her back then, she felt threatened. So despite being very weak after giving birth, she didn’t hesitate, and tried to kill the girl.

Now that she’s facing the people responsible for harming her child, Black’s killer instinct was fully invoked.

Black pounces at the nearest acolyte which was the man wearing furred jacket. Surprised at the speed of the monstrous wolf, the man could only quickly roll to his left. But due to the suddenness and the size of the monster, the man was still grazed by one of Black’s claws on his right shoulder which created a gash on said shoulder that was so deep that bone could be seen!

The man wearing furred jacket grimace at the pain: He had lost the use of his right arm just like that!

Seeing their fellow acolyte wounded, the other two quickly took action and attack the monstrous wolf with their magic. Black on the other hand was long prepared for any counter-attack and easily dodges the magic. As if a black wind of death, Black appeared in front of the woman with glasses, open her mouth wide and bites!

The woman’s eyes widened as the maw of death grew closer and larger. She desperately wanted to dodge but her body was rooted on the spot. Her last thought was: “I’m dead.

Pushi!

“”NO!!!””

The two men screamed in horror after seeing Black biting the woman’s head off. The woman’s headless body sprayed blood everywhere before falling down.

But it didn’t end there. After killing the woman, Black disappeared again and this time appeared on the man she had wounded earlier. This time though the man wasn’t so lucky. Black’s huge front paw came barreling down and crushed the wounded man!

After killing the man wearing furred jacket, Black turned towards the purple-robed man who was desperate trying to escape. But would the ferocious Black let the man escape? The answer to that was obvious.

Not long after a loud scream of terror was heard…

****

“Oh? They died that quickly?”

The jester like envoy heard the scream of one of the acolytes and new instantly that things ended up badly for them. But despite knowing of his comrades’ grim fate, the envoy didn’t show any sadness and was instead showing a face of disgust. He was disgusted for by their weakness.

“It seemed that your friends’ death have no effect on you at all!” Yggdra suddenly spoke in a voice full of disgust.

Yggdra was disgusted by the man after hearing him speaking ill of his companions. Although she was indirectly responsible for their deaths, the man’s reaction didn’t sit well to her. It was as if the jester-like man never saw the three acolytes as friends – and she would be right.

“Friends? Who said they’re my friends? Also, why would I care if some trash died?” the envoy answered with a smile. The envoy might be smiling but there’s nothing warm about it. On the contrary, the envoy has always been a cold person. So even though three acolytes died, the man doesn’t care at all. His colorful outfit was just a façade for his cold nature.

Upon hearing the man’s cold reply, Yggdra no longer spoke but instead increases the intensity of her attacks.

“Oh my! Oh my! Are you angry little spirit?” the envoy teases as he slashed the seemingly endless roots trying to entangle him. Despite being seemingly overwhelmed, the envoy was not panicking at all. No, it could even be said that he was having fun.

Yes, even the way he fought was strange. It was as if he was playing, or maybe dancing was more apt of a word? Every time the roots attack him, he would spin around – flashing two daggers that would easily cut the attacking roots.

What’s more, he doesn’t seem to be in a hurry. Despite being capable enough to go straight to the tree spirit’s main body, the jester-like envoy was taking his time – it was as if he was waiting for something to happen…

The envoy was so tricky to fight that even Yggdra was getting impatient. Fortunately, the tree spirit no longer has to suffer any longer.  Help had finally arrived.

No, it was not Black. Although their initial plan was for the monstrous wolf to finish off her opponent quickly (which she did) and help Yggdra fight the envoy. Someone else volunteered to fight the jester instead.

The fact that this “person” deemed it necessary to intervene signifies the great threat that the mysterious envoy possessed. Yes, the one that wishes to fight the envoy was none other than…
