International Women's Day: A historical struggle to make women's voices heard For 110 years, today, March 8, we have been celebrating International Women's Day around the world. The celebration of Women's Day began on March 8, 1909 in the United States with a declaration issued by the Socialist Party of America. This day represents the historical struggle of women for equality, in which they won their right to education, the right to vote, the right to hold all functions in society, the right to choose motherhood and all fundamental rights guaranteed by law. How did Women's Day start to be celebrated in the first place? Workers at a New York textile factory went on strike on March 8, 1857, demanding better working conditions and higher wages, and just two months later they formed a union. Over the following years, strikes and protests by women continued, and one of the most famous is certainly the one from 1908, when 15,000 women protested in New York City demanding the right to vote, better wages and shorter working hours. Only two years later, in 1910, the celebration of Women's Day became official, and the first international women's conference organized by the Socialist International was held in Copenhagen. Then, at the suggestion of German socialist Clare Zetkin, it was decided that March 8 would be marked as International Women's Day.
