Creation Myth of The Hausa Tribe
According to the Girgam, the Daura Emirate was established in 2,000BC and it all began from Canaan when the people travelled and settled in Daura. A man called Bayajidda arrived from Baghdad (who is the main figure of the Bayajidda legend).
According to a great scholar from the University of Ilorin Lawal Michael, Bayajidda’s name was not initially Bayajidda. Lawal said his real name was Abu Yazid and when he got to Daura, he went to the house of Ayyina and asked her to give him water for he was a traveler. She told him about the predicament of the land of Daura.
The well in Daura called Kasugu was inhabited by a snake called Saki who allowed citizens of Daura to fetch water only on Fridays. Abu Yazid killed the snake and because of what he had done, the queen married him. Furthermore, Lawal stated that after his marriage to the queen, the people started to call him Bayajidda which means “someone who doesn’t understand hausa but now understands the way of the hausa people”.
According to the Bayajidda legend, the hausa states were founded by the sons of Bayajidda. A prince whose origin differs by tradition, but official records has him as the person who married the last Kabara of Daura and heralded the end of the matriarch monarchs that had erstwhile ruled the hausa people. Bayajidda was not only remembered for his bravery but also for his devotion to protecting the people so three years after his marriage to the queen, the village was attacked by the serpentine tribes of Hakorin Karfe and the tribe of Sakina.
The snake tribes were causing chaos and as the guards of the palace charged it was total pandemonium. Then Bayajidda came with a sword and thunder and lightning. He then raised the sword to the sun and yelled, “sadaukin karfi” then the lightning destroyed half of the sakina tribe. Then an earthquake occurred and the rest died. And Bayajidda was named the hero of his people.
