Is it sustainable to have a rooftop wind turbine?
I have always had this in mind after seeing a video where someone had 4 turbines on their rooftop that gave close to 3.5 kw power and each one generated close to 1 kw. Ever since I saw that video, I was wondering if that was a feasible option for our home or not. Compared to solar power, wind turbines consume less space and in places where there is more wind like coastal regions, the efficiency will also be better.
There are several drawbacks to generating our own power but at the same time, there are also enough advantages that can balance out. This has now become a new trend in India where people make use of the sun's availability effectively and produce their own power with the help of solar panels. It definitely doesn't work for everyone but for some people, it does work and they are happy about it. The other day I saw someone mention that he is able to provide enough power to his whole house and at the same time, he is also able to charge his car. We are going to discuss the sustainability factors in this article.
Noise Management
Noise can be one of the biggest reasons why people don't want to explore this. But some people try to do some noise management and make sure they don't have any huge noise from the turbine. Compared to the big industrial turbines, domestic or rooftop wind turbines are not very noisy. But not many people are using it currently in our place and it is hard to say how effective are they in the long run. Maybe during the initial days, it can be good but gradually when it becomes old, it might start making too much noise. Hopefully, it should be manageable enough.
Automatic direction change
These days there are some smart solar panels that would change the direction based on the direction of the Sun. This is one of the recent innovations. Though there is a chip inside that takes care of doing that, in the case of wind turbines, it is all mechanical. In some of the wind turbines, there is this automatic direction change facility that would happen when based on the direction of the win. The rotation is in such a way that the turbine adjusts itself and moves in a direction that is suitable and efficient to produce more.
Cost-effective
This was the most surprising thing for me. I initially thought this may not be a possibility for people in India because it can be costly to implement and at the same time it may not be very effective. But later I found out that it was not very costly. I did not explore much to find out how much it would cost but I heard that it was not that costly and it was obviously affordable for people who would like to use it.
Self-service
Most of the modern equipment is very friendly when it comes to service. They say that the rooftop wind turbines also don't need any big servicing from the firm and we can do the service and maintenance by ourselves. Usually, they are also long-lasting, and based on the weather conditions it might need some tweaking but otherwise, they are very good and they can manage very well without our interference.
