Financial engineering might be a popular course in colleges
Maybe Financial Engineering is not already a course but probably we might see that course in colleges in another few years. I may even be wrong and there can be a subject for financial engineering in some of the colleges even now. I would say this is a very important field and mostly there will be a great demand for this field in various fields like mathematics, data analytics, problem-solving, computation, etc. This could be the branch of finance that can use engineering techniques to create financial products and offer services based on those products.
In addition to the product that can be built out of financial engineering, there is also a high possibility that lots of research work can be carried out based on these financial products and some modelings can also be created for the analysis. This would give lots of knowledge and approaches to investment strategies. This can be handy for both individuals or a big investment player in the market. This can probably combine not only Engineering but also economics, statistics, computer science, and various other fields of study as well.
When they introduce Financial Engineering in the college, a lot of subjects can be introduced to the students to study. Some of the subjects that come to my mind are.
Market analysis
Portfolio Management
Trading Strategies
Risk management
Investments
Pricing
The above are just financial topics but if applied to engineering, there is a possibility for creating financial models and analyzing the data accordingly. Some tools that involve other aspects of engineering can also be made and can be used to perform this data analysis. Computer Science plays an important role in this. Data is the key element here and in order to play around with the data, all these engineering tools are going to be helpful.
For example, if we take medicine as a course, not all the doctors who complete their degrees go to treating patients. They do some specializations in some particular field and start contributing to that field. I know a few doctors who are in a business where they buy and sell medical equipment. You can call them a perfect business person than a doctor. But they hold an MBBS degree and they did complete their full medical course. It all depends on what someone wants to become.
Usually, Engineering is a field that requires a strong background in the field of computer science, mathematics, and even other science subjects. But when it becomes a subject in college for financial Engineering, it is obvious that all these expectations are also linked with finance as a subject and the focus becomes diversified on building products and tools that combine both finance and engineering. We can even say that these are some things that bring both Finance and Engineering together.
The opportunities for someone who is completing financial engineering would also be enormous. They can get a job in banks where they can take care of investment banking. The trading sector also needs lots of stats analysis, someone with a financial engineering degree would be a great asset to that sector too. Insurance companies are also the best place to start a career as a financial engineer because it is also a sector that would have great demand in the future.
The future of financial engineering is going to be bright and there can be a huge demand for financial engineers. There once used to be a time when Mechanical Engineers had a huge demand and it was hard to get a degree in mechanical engineering. The same demand happened with Computer Science and Engineering too. Soon there would be a huge demand for Financial Engineering as well.
