Trsat, first heard of as far back as 799, is an ideal place for walks, coffee and sightseeing. First of all, the Trsat castle, which dates back to prehistoric times when it was only an observatory. Its present appearance is due to its last owner, Count Laval Nugent, who bought it in the first half of the 19th century and restored it as a family mausoleum.
In the immediate vicinity is the Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat, one of the oldest in Croatia, which was visited in June 2003 by Pope John Paul II. A monument to the Holy Father - the pilgrim from Trsat , the work of the sculptor Ante Jurkić, was erected in his memory in the sanctuary . According to the legend, the sanctuary on Trsat was built in 1291 when the Nazareth house of the Holy Family, brought by angels, appeared there. For seven centuries, this place has been visited by many pilgrims from all over the world, and it is especially solemn on August 15 for the feast of the Assumption. The sanctuary and the Franciscan monastery are connected with the center of Rijeka and the stairs of Petar Kružić, which this Croatian military leader had built in 1531 and after whom they are named today. There are a total of 561 steps of pleasant walk from the city center to Trsat.
Be sure to visit the Trsat park created in the period between the two world wars according to the project of architect Zlatko Prikrilo and horticultural expert Josip Kulfanek, known for the use of indigenous plants and respect for the natural stone landscape, and the cemetery.
And last but not least, Trsat has an excellent catering offer, so be sure to seal your walk and sightseeing with delicious food.
