“Saint Martin” is a small island in the Bay of Bengal. This is the only coral island in Bangladesh. “Saint Martin” is one of the best tourist attractions in Bangladesh. It is located northeast of the Bay of Bengal. About 250 years ago, the island came to the attention of Arab merchants. They used to come to Chittagong and South East Asia to trade and stopover at this island. They named it “Jajira”. Later its name was changed from “Jajira” to “Jinjira”. The first permanent human settlement was established here in 1890. At one stage the island was called “Narikel Jinjira” (Coconut Jinjira) because of the abundance of coconut trees. Another popular name for “Saint Martin” is Daruchini Dwip (Cinnamon Island). The Portuguese once came to this island and they named it Dardiusi Island. According to many, in the 1900s, British land surveyors annexed the island as part of British India, naming it “Saint Martin”, after the Christian Saint “Martin”. According to others, it was named after Martin, the then Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong. “Saint Martin”'s Island is located at the mouth of the “Naf River”. Administratively it is a union in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar district. Geographically the island is divided into three parts. One of these three parts is “Chhera Island”. About 5,000 years ago, “Saint Martin” was part of the mainland of “Teknaf”. The length of “Saint Martin” is about 8 kilometers. Massive changes can be observed on “Saint Martin”'s Island during tide. The island is composed mainly of limestone. If the sky is clear, Teknaf and the mountains of Myanmar can be seen from the east-west beach of the island. Sunrise and sunset from St. Martin can be enjoyed very well. About 1.5 lakh visitors visit here in every year. Once you're here, in fact, it's bound to fall in love.
