The southern face of Mount Everest visible from the sky

The Great Trigonometric Survey of India in 1857 determined the height of Mount Everest (then known as Mount 15) to be 7,640 m (29,002 ft). In 185, the Royal Geographical Society, on the recommendation of Indian Surveyor General Andrew Scott Wahr, renamed Mount Everest, the 15th peak of its predecessor George Everest, to Mount Everest. , Which was confirmed by a Chinese survey in 1985.

British mountaineers were the first to try to climb this mountain. Since foreigners were not allowed to enter Nepal at this time, the British made several attempts to ascend the northern slopes of the mountain from the Tibetan side. On the expedition to Mount Everest in 1921, the British ascended 8,000 m (22,960 ft) from Tibet. Then in the expedition of 1922, they ascended to an altitude of 6,320 m (26,300 ft) and set a new record in human history. Seven freighters were killed in the avalanche during the landing. The most mysterious expedition in the history of the 1923 Everest expedition: George Mallory and Andrew Irwin made one last attempt to ascend the summit but failed to return, leading to a debate over whether their ascent was the first successful ascent. In 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first climbed the southeastern ridge from Nepal. On May 25, 1980, Chinese mountaineers Wang Fuzhou, Gonpo, and Chu Yinhua climbed the northern peak for the first time.
