The month of July has seen a lot of twists and turns on Netflix NFLX. The daily-rotating Top 10 list for movies has seen seven different films claim the #1 position in just 24 days—a far cry from June when 365 Days largely dominated the month.

That kind of movement has made for a very interesting Top 10 when it comes to the monthly rankings. No movie has been able to command the month like 365 Days did during June, which means several movies still have a chance to come out on top of the monthly rankings by the end of July.

So let’s take a look. Thus far, here are the top ten movies in the month of July.

Note: the points for each film are tallied using this point-tracking system.

10. Despicable Me – 59 points

Big surprise! It turns out that Despicable Me has accrued more points from the Top 10 than any film this year. The film ranked in third place for the month of April, second place for the month of May and 11th place for the month of June. The 59 points the animated hit has earned this month brings its yearly total to 371 points—easily the most of any movie on Netflix.

9. ONLY – 70 points

ONLY enjoyed a short but impressive run on Netflix between July 7-16. In just ten days, the independent thriller culled together 70 points (that’s an average of seven points per day) and achieved the #2 position on the daily Top 10 on July 8.

8. The Town – 75 points

Ben Affleck’s 2010 crime thriller was one of the surprise hits that kicked off the month. The film spent 12 days on the Top 10 list and hit the #2 position on July 2. The movie then fell off the Top 10 completely on July 13.

7. Patriots Day – 79 points

No film this month had a bigger fall-off than Patriots Daywhich kicked off July with five consecutive days in the #1 position. However, after that five-day run, the Mark Wahlberg movie would disappear from the Top 10 list entirely just four days later.

6. Fatal Affair – 82 points

While The Old Guard seemed poised for a legendary run in the #1 spot, Fatal Affair had something to say about it. The dramatic thriller dethroned The Old Guard from the top position on July 16, and then held onto that #1 spot for seven consecutive days. That’s a feat only five other movies have accomplished on Netflix.

5. 365 Days – 86 points

Today marked the very first day since 365 Days’s June 9 premiere that the film didn’t appear on the Top 10—which very nearly set a record. That means 365 Days spent the first 23 days of July as one of the ten most popular films on Netflix. That allowed 365 Days to follow up its dominating month of June with an impressive July. On the 2020 list, 365 Days ranks as the third-most popular film.

4. How Do You Know – 90 points

Maybe the strangest appearance on this list has been the forgotten 2010 romantic comedy How Do You Know. The Reese Witherspoon film premiered on the Top 10 on July 10 in the #8 position and has never risen above the #3 spot. Yet, in 15 days the movie has accrued enough points to beat out just about every other movie on Netflix this month.

3. Desperados – 114 points

For several days, Desperados was unequivocally the #1 movie on Netflix for the month of July. The Netflix Original comedy would go on to lose its reigning position, but not before racking up 114 points—which was more points than any movie earned (besides 365 Days) during the month of June.

2. The Old Guard – 134 points

In its first 15 days, The Old Guard has experienced quite the memorable run. The first six days were spent at #1, and the next six days were spent at #2. In total, the action film’s 134 points are enough to already rank The Old Guard in the top ten for the entire year.

1. The Lorax – 149 points

Animated films have enjoyed a great history on Netflix’s Top 10. Of the ten most popular movies on Netflix this year, four of them are animated—including The Lorax, which just moved into the #9 position. That’s impressive, considering the Danny DeVito film has only seen two days in the #1 spot this month. But at the end of the day, no movie has been more successful in July than The Lorax.
