Brave is the first single from Sara Bareilles' fourth full-length album which was recorded in Los Angeles and New York.

Not just random thoughts, but a situation of a close friend, and her life's story of battling with personal deconstruction in 2012 inspired Bareilles in the composition of this strengthening song.

This song was influenced by the close friend of Sara who was struggling to come out of his shell for being gay. The song often gives meaning to something important that someone may be ashamed to tell someone else or the world about it.

In a video interview, she further explained her motivations for coming up with the song. According to her, there are so much honor, integrity, and beauty in being able to be who we are.

Brave is about speaking what is in your mind. Most often, we are too self-conscious and afraid of what people are going to think that we are keeping things back. This song became the anthem of all people since everyone has been there at one time or another in our lives.

Being able to feel relaxed doing what you want to say is also something that most people would sadly never encounter. The optimistic tempo and motivating lyrics are urging us all to continue believing in ourselves and keep fighting back. Everybody is special. We are special in every single way. We are brave!
