Keywords: Covid-19 and the New Normal
Epilogue
In recent times, a new term has emerged, the new normal. Of course this term raises the opposite, namely the Old Normal. If this term is officially used, it will lead us to familiar terms, namely the Old and New Orders.
The difference is, the old and new orders are related to the political situation. The Old Order was the reign of President Soekarno. While the New Order is the time that is pinned on the 32 years of Suharto's leadership.
For the time being, the term New Normal has been conveyed by the Secretary General of the Independent Election Monitoring Committee (KIPP) Kaka Suminta.
Apart from Kaka, former General Elections Commission (KPU) commissioner Sigit Pamungkas has used the term New Normal in his Facebook status.
One of the media, Kompas, has also used the term New Normal in its news story '2020 Regional Elections Facing a New Normal' (Kompas, Friday, May 8, 2020).
Looking for Understanding
Back to the terms Old Normal and New. Gajah Mada University Political Lecturer Sigit Pamungkas explained, the New Normal is a new way of life or a new way of carrying out life activities in the midst of the unfinished COVID-19 pandemic. Sigit explained, the New Normal is needed to solve life's problems during Covid-19.
Sigit gave an example, the New Normal is an alternative as the basis for national policies to meet consumption needs. Because public consumption is related to production and distribution activities. In addition, he explained, social conditions also require interaction. Also, it is impossible for religious activities to continuously confine adherents to an online space.
Kompas in its article does not explain the meaning of the New Normal. However, the title and content of the news reporting the situation of local democracy emphasizes the choice to carry out the 2020 Pilkada in the conditions of Covid-19. Apart from that article, there are several other articles in Kompas that write about the term New Normal.
Whoever started this New Normal word, there is a clear common thread. This term is generally agreed to unknowingly explain the conditions formed due to the length of social life of the community during Covid-19. Thus, the habit becomes a new habit that will be embedded in everyday life.
Some studies explain, a habit that is constantly done will become a new habit. On this point, almost all social researchers sit in the same opinion. The difference lies in how long it takes the new habit to form.
Some experts who determine how long a new habit is created include, Dr. Maxwell Maltz from the book Psychocybernetics set 21 days to form a new habit. However, Phillippa Lally of University College London said her research set an average of 66 days to change the habit into a habit, according to the publication of her research in the European Journal of Social Psychology. The opinions of these two experts were also published by Kompas (12 July 2018) with the title 'How Long Does It Take To Change Habits?'.
Equating for The Meaning
Therefore, the time required to establish the New Normal state has already passed the standard time. Is it 21 days, 66 days, or 100 days. At least, if it is calculated from January 2020 until the time this article is published. So, five months have been fulfilled to form a new habit.
At least, theoretically and technically, our New Normal is, among other things, reluctant to shake hands or shake hands. There is a new habit in Corona that uses the elbow instead of the palm. Another example is the habit of wearing masks. Appeals, recommendations, and even orders to wear masks at home have become a new habit. Likewise, the habit of washing hands and keeping a distance.
However, we still need a common understanding of the New Normal and Old Normal. So, the New Normal is a condition and/or social habit of the community that emerged after Covid-19 was over. Like the New Normal, the Old Normal is the social condition of the community before the COVID-19 pandemic. Hopefully this new normal does not make social society into a new group that loses its old social.
