US President Joe Biden on Wednesday signed a decree requiring US federal institutions to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, a new way for him to reaffirm his climate ambitions.

This goal includes creating a federal fleet of electric vehicles, upgrading 300,000 federal buildings, and making significant changes to the ways that power the country.

"The president counts on the efforts of all government agencies to address the climate crisis in a way that creates well-paid jobs, develops industries, and makes the country more economically competitive," the White House said in a press release.

The decree signed by Joe Biden mandates that all federal institutions operate on carbon-neutral energy by 2030. It also halts state purchases of gasoline-powered cars by 2035.

The White House emphasized that the decree was a means of "setting an example" and empowering the president to continue working to deliver on two of his key promises: reducing pollution levels in the US energy sector to zero by 2035 and achieving total carbon neutrality in the country by 2050.

In parallel, President Biden has urged members of Congress in recent days to embrace his massive social and climate project, which allocates more than $550 billion to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Democrats hope to have the bill passed by Christmas
