Depression
Depression is a widespread mental health disorder characterized by a depressed mood that pervades all aspects of one's life for a longer period of time. It is accompanied by low self-esteem, loss of energy, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, and a reduction in physical activity.
These symptoms must be present for most of the day, nearly every day, over the course of at least two weeks. In addition, these symptoms must represent a change from previous functioning. In other words, the depression must be severe enough to make a difference in how you live your life.
Depression is a common mental disorder – one that affects people of all different ages, races and cultures. Depression is caused by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Depression is a medical diagnosis listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) by the American Psychiatric Association.
Depression is a serious medical illness and not a weakness or character flaw. Depression can be treated through medication and/or psychotherapy and it's important that individuals suffering with depression get help to overcome their symptoms.
But sometimes it may not be possible to get professional treatment due to lack of money or proximity to mental health service providers. In cases like these it's important that those affected get support from friends and loved ones, including people close to them in their life.
Major depression can be characterised by feelings of sadness, emptiness, loss of interest and enjoyment, feelings of worthlessness and guilt, poor concentration and memory loss, fatigue, disturbed sleep and appetite changes. People who are experiencing depression might also have difficulty controlling their thoughts and may feel suicidal.
Depression is a disease that is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. The exact causes of this chemical imbalance are not known, but together with the genetic, and environmental factors, there are likely to be many causes of depression. For example, it may be that some people are less able to cope with difficult life experiences. When the stress becomes too much, they develop depression. Depression can last for any length of time and vary in severity, it may come and go or be long-lasting. Depression will vary in intensity and cause different symptoms in different people.
