But also in many cultures a small gift is preferred, or nothing at all. Learning to say another word especially greeting or a thank you, can help you be able to get attention from the people because naturally people want to get a feel of connection with you in some way. It's also a way to show that you appreciate the other persons kindness. In some areas, the way people say "thank you" is really different and you may have to first learn how to say this otherwise you might be disappointed for example, in Japan, people bow to each other as a way to show gratitude, or they even appreciate a little gift in some formal occasions. In India, it's a bit different as it could create a distance.
