The fundamental capacity of the lungs is the procedure of gas trade called breath (or relaxing). In breath, oxygen from approaching air enters the blood, and carbon dioxide, a waste gas from the digestion, leaves the blood. A decreased lung work implies that the capacity of lungs to trade gases is diminished.
