Please don't overlook the importance of mental health in the same way that physical health is.

The state of one's mental health is a crucial component of overall health. According to the World Health Organization, a person who does not have a sound mind is not healthy at all, even if he is free of sickness.

What is the definition of mental health?

The mental health of an individual is reflected in his or her thoughts, feelings, actions, and behaviors in various settings. It determines one's capacity to cope with everyday difficulties, make meaningful contributions to society, and have a good time in one's life. It is possible to develop mental illnesses or disorders if one's condition of emotional, psychological, behavioral, cognitive, and social well-being deteriorates significantly (Anxiety disorders, Mood disorders, and schizophrenia disorders).

Alarming numbers point to the need for increased mental health awareness.

An estimated one in every seven Indians suffers from a mental health condition; however, the reported rates are lower due to the stigma associated with mental illness in Indian society, which is followed by denial and hesitancy to seek help. India's relative contribution to worldwide suicide fatalities is significant and growing. India is responsible for 36.6 percent of all female suicides worldwide and 24.3 percent of all male suicides. According to the World Health Organization, 4.5 percent of the Indian population suffers from depression, while 3.5 percent suffers from anxiety disorders.

What is the significance of healthy mental health?

Mental health determines the decisions we must make in our lives in order to have good connections (personal/social) with others, how to successfully deal with stress, how to deal with life's uncertainties, and how to adapt to changes in our lives.

According to studies, strong mental health is related with increased learning, enhanced creativity, improved pro-social conduct, a better ability to cope with adversity, and a greater sense of well-being. Enhanced performance, high productivity, and efficiency at the office or in school, as well as improved physical health and life expectancy, are all associated with mindfulness.

What are the risk factors that have an impact on one's mental health?

In certain cases, the complex interaction between biological and environmental variables may be a contributing factor to the development of mental health problems. An individual who is genetically predisposed [has a family history of mental illness] is more vulnerable to stressful situations. An unhealthy lifestyle (poor nutrition, excessive use of alcohol, narcotics, and cigarettes), chronic medical illnesses (diabetes, cancer, hypothyroidism), a personal history of brain damage or trauma, and life events that define an individual's personality can all have an impact on brain chemistry. The following are examples of social and psychological elements that can have a detrimental impact on mental health:

  • Being mistreated or neglected as a child is a terrible experience.

  • Family discord and disarray are common.

  • Relationship that is abusive

  • Loss due to death, divorce, or grief within the last several months

  • Isolation and loneliness in social situations

  • Unemployment, poverty, and debt are all examples of financial disadvantage.

  • Early Warning Signs that necessitate the need for medical intervention

Seek professional assistance if you are depressed or if you see warning signals such as the following:

  • Changes in eating or sleeping habits (eating too much or sleeping too little).

  • People's withdrawal from one another

  • A general lack of interest in all activities.

  • Experiencing inexplicable aches and pains, as well as persistent exhaustion (low energy)

  • Having a powerless or despairing feeling

  • Frequently smoking, drinking, or doing drugs is a bad habit.

  • Confused, forgetful, furious, impatient, agitated, frightened, or afraid on a regular basis; or

  • Experiencing mood fluctuations that might be detrimental to one's relationships

  • Having thoughts and experiences that stick around for a long time

  • Hearing voices or feeling detached from reality are both symptoms of schizophrenia.

  • Self-harm or injuring others are considered to be suicidal thoughts.

  • Inability to carry out everyday activities (e.g., getting to work or school, cooking).

Individuals who receive timely intervention, such as counseling sessions with a skilled psychologist or psychiatrist, as well as lifestyle adjustment, can better manage with mental health concerns.

Suggestions for maintaining good mental health

Consume nutritious foods.

Take advantage of enough sunshine (30 minutes to 2 hours each day).

Relaxation methods should be practiced (yoga, deep breathing, meditation)

Maintain a healthy physical and mental state by engaging in regular exercise, engaging in preferred hobbies, and learning new things.

Make sure you get enough sleep to recharge your batteries. It contributes to the improvement of one's mood.

Smoking and heavy alcohol intake should be avoided.

Engage in conversation with friends and family members. Maintain contact with your loved ones and express your emotions to them.

Always keep in mind that you are significant. Maintain your strength and optimism. It is not necessary to be ashamed of having a mental disease; it is simply another physical ailment that must be addressed.
