Bitcoin Pizza Day is celebrated by the crypto world in honor of the first commercial use of bitcoin on May 18 and 22, 2010.

First commercial use of bitcoin

     Florida computer programmer Laszlo Hanyecz offered 10,000 bitcoins in exchange for two large pizzas on the bitcointalk forum on May 18, 2010, at 12:35:20 AM. No one took this seriously, but on May 22, 2010, at 7:17:26 PM, Laszlo updated to say the deal was done. The deal was struck with then-student and pizza delivery guy Jeremy Sturdivant.

• Laszlo Hanyecz invented the method of CPU mining to mine bitcoins. Although its use has now become redundant for bitcoin mining, Hanyecz may be considered one of the early founders of crypto, specifically PoW.

• Jeremy Sturdivant could be called lucky, but he spent those bitcoins cheaply on a date with his girlfriend. Today, 10,000 bitcoins would have bought him a private island.
