Bangabandhu spent 4,072 days in jail
Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had to spend a quarter of his life in jail from the beginning of the anti-British struggle to the independence of Bangladesh.
At the age of 54, Bangabandhu was in jail for 4,072 days, which is a quarter of his total life.
As a student of the school, he was imprisoned for seven days during the British rule and the remaining 4,065 days were spent in jail during the Pakistan period.
Her eldest daughter, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has often said that her younger siblings rarely got in touch with her father because of her imprisonment.
Sheikh Hasina also wrote an incident of her brother Sheikh Kamal. In his words, “Sheikh Kamal never saw or knew Abba. When I keep running to Abba, calling him Abba Abba, he is just staring in amazement… he suddenly asks me, Hasu Apa, I call your father a little Abba. ”
The Father of the Nation first went to jail in 1936 as a schoolboy. At that time he was imprisoned for seven days. He was then imprisoned for five days from March 11 to March 15, 1947. He went to jail on September 11 of the same year and was released on January 21, 1949. At this point he was imprisoned for 132 days.
Awami League leader Sheikh Mujib went to jail again on 19 April 1949 and was released from 60 days on 26 June of that year. In September of that year, he was again imprisoned for 28 days.
He was imprisoned for 63 days from October 25, 1949 to December 26, 1949. From 1 January 1950 to 28 February 1952, Bangabandhu was in jail for 7 consecutive days.
Even after winning the 1954 elections, Bangabandhu had to go to jail. At this stage Bangabandhu was imprisoned for 206 days.
After the promulgation of Ayub Khan Martial Law in 1956, Bangabandhu was arrested on 11 October. During this time he had to spend 1,153 consecutive days in jail.
At this time Bangabandhu was imprisoned for the longest time (more than 3 years).
Bangabandhu was arrested again on 7 January 1972 and released on 16 June of that year. At this point he was imprisoned for 156 days.
He was then imprisoned for 65 days in 1974 and 1975.
After giving six points considered as the certificate of liberation of Bengalis, Bangabandhu was arrested on several occasions while holding rallies in different parts of the country to build public opinion in favor of it. He held 32 public meetings and was imprisoned for 90 days in different terms.
Sheikh Mujib was arrested again on 7 May 1966 and released on 22 February through a mass uprising in 1969.
At that time he was in jail for 1,021 days. After his release, he was given the title of Bangabandhu at a student-mass reception.
The government of Pakistan arrested Bangabandhu shortly after the declaration of independence in the early hours of March 26, 1971.
He was kept in a cell in Pakistan's Mianali prison. At this point he was 28 days.
